This Latina is angry with anthropology at the moment...

I am venting and voicing a frustration that has been simmering for some time. It is a frustration with the academic community. My anger is aimed directly at those who devote their life's work to the study of culture, yet continue to make people who are representative of some cultures feel alienated in academia. Coming from my background, I've lived through some of the subject matter that many ethnographers write books about. Never has this been fully realized until today while I attended the…See More

"Thanks Arleen :) I not only insist on persevering, but I'd like to encourage other Latinas and representatives from marginalized groups to come into these disciplines. There needs to be discourse with diverse input and perspectives."

"This was an excellent, thought-provoking post, and definitely something I've experienced even as an English major. I've been to cultural studies talks and there's always, inevitably, a white theorist (or a theorist of a different…"

"Your timeline is visible to friends and, if enough mutual friends comment on it, it's visible. The way to resolve this is by changing the setting to being visible to only you. While you can control what you post, what others post to your wall…"

Ever get the feeling someone is talking to you or you're being watched?

This evening, it became apparent how important my image is. A friend of mine posted a controversial picture on my FB wall today. I didn't think much about it because I didn't think anybody could see what was posted to my "timeline" by other people, and it went to the back of my mind. I thought wrong. When I was in 12th grade, I was chosen to participate in a program that encouraged civic participation among its participants. We were flown to Washington,D.C. and given insight into the political…See More

Selena, almost 20 years later...

There is this bazaar in Dallas called Bargin City. It is a Mexican bazaar like many bazaars just like it. Walk in and you will be greeted by the smell of tacos and leather cowboy boots. Bargin City hasn't corrected the erroneous spelling of its name, and it hasn't changed much since I was a kid. Even in the time of MP3's, there still remains a few booths with their walls adorned with discs and tapes of Tejano musicians. (Yeah, tapes!) I remember it was here that I first saw a poster of…See More

Respect and Gender Equality in the Hallway

Growing up, I learned the value of respect. Respect can open doors and earn you respect in the process. Having a disrespectful attitude towards the wrong people could get you in trouble, whether it's in school, at work, or out in the world. Respect extends much further than "yes mam'","yes sir'", or "please and thank you". Respect means to legitimately value those in your life and show that they are appreciated. We are often expected to respect our superiors and authority, such as teachers,…See More

"My freshman year at Jester, there was a cleaning lady who started talking to me. I don't speak Spanish very well, and she didn't speak English very well, but she'd say things to me when I'd pass by. Whether it was inquiring about…"
