Recommendations for college entrance essays

My recommendation for all Latinitas applying to college is to be honest with yourself when writing your college entrance essays. Universities enjoy reading about what got you to this point- the point of applying to college, how has your life shaped you into who you are today, and what are your hopes and dreams for the future. I wish I can remember what I wrote back in 2007 when I was applying to college, but I know I included my perseverance and positive attitude to school and staying involved.…See More

My favorite Hispanic tradition

One of the beautiful things about Hispanic culture is that each family has their own traditions. Whether it be a big family gathering, or something as small as going out to dinner once in a while. One of the common misconceptions about Hispanic culture is that every family gets together for various occasions. Although, this may be true for some families, it is not always the case for others. For me, my favorite Hispanic tradition is spending time with my siblings when we are all together. Since…See More

Why do Latinas make strong leaders?

Latinas make strong leaders because of their perseverance. I've seen this from my personal experience, and from other Latina family members and friends. We don't let anyone put us down, because we know we have the power to make a great impact. I have noticed throughout my career that I'm not the type of person who gives up. I like to take things to the next level, and prove to myself that I can accomplish what I didn't think was possible. Even if it's not successful, at least I tried. That's…See More

My future hopes for the Latino community

Posted on October 14, 2012 at 6:04pm 1 Comment

My future hopes for the Latino community is that we continue to do great things. Not only for us, but to make our world a better place for future generations of Latinos. I hope that we all realize our dreams, and dream big enough to make those happen. I also hope that we continue to take chances, and do things because they make us happy. There is no better satisfaction than knowing you experienced, and achieved something great.

So in the words of of Mark Twain, “Twenty…

Advice for younger Latinas

Posted on October 14, 2012 at 11:53am 0 Comments

If there is anything we need now more than ever are women leaders, but especially Latina leaders. I've seen many younger Latinas not having the tools needed to succeed, merely because they don't have role models to look up to. So my advice for all Latinas is to not let anyone put you down. Be strong, take chances, stand up for what you believe in, travel (it will enhance you with a global perspective), be confident, and remember that you are a person with great potential.

We…

Stereotypes of Latino Culture in Film - Dealing with Traditions

Posted on October 11, 2012 at 11:31pm 1 Comment

One common stereotype in film and television is that Latinos tend to have big families who are tight-knit, and in many cases, live together as well, including the extended family members such as grandparents or cousins. Another recurring theme is cooking - one popular image is that of all the tias, abuelas, and hermanas always in the kitchen making tamales. For some Latino families in real life, these things might be true, but it's not always the case for all Latino families in the United…
