Cynthia Amaya commented on Karina Gonzalez's blog post Hispanics, Latinas, and Chicanas
"I completely agree that things still look grim for people of our culture. Although they aren't as bad as they were prior to the Chicano Movement, discrimination is still real. Not only that, I have noticed that people of color are shying away…"

Hispanics, Latinas, and Chicanas

As a Latina I know we are a proud race, we always have been. That being said, our outlook on life has changed since our abuelos were our age.  I would first like to point out that we have not always been as free as we are now, obviously. There was a dark period in history that allowed people to be as discriminating as they wanted and sadly the dark period still hasn't fully passed yet. Granted there are more opportunities for us now than in the 1950’s and 60’s. Which leads me to my next…See More

Karina Gonzalez replied to Wendy Gonzalez's discussion Dieting And its Negative Effects
"Thank you for writing this. This is a topic that I believe should get more attention since I see a lot of people going on the outrageous fad diets and then later I hear them complaining about how the just gained all the weight back and then…"

What is the American dream?

Growing up I’m sure that most of us have heard about the “American Dream”. But what really is the American dream? What is the difference between our grandparent’s view and our view of the American dream? How does everybody describe the American Dream? Allow me to give you an example; I describe the American Dream as, people having the right to whatever they want whenever they want without being judged. However, someone else could describe it as something completely different. This correlates…See More

The way things are for us in the media

Whenever I watch a movie that has a Latina in it, she tends to be the sex symbol. She is the one that wears the provocative clothing, and occasionally the one making sexual innuendos. But that’s just the women, what about the teens/ young adults? Well the most recent movie that I know of that has a teenage Latina is called Girl in Progress. It stars Eva Mendes as the mother and Cierra Ramirez as the daughter. It is about a 15 year old who decides that she wants to shortcut growing up by losing…See More

The Wonderful World of Folklore

Okay Latinitas, Quick question, how many of you know about folklore? And for those (if any) who do, can you think of any?Well. for those of you who don't know what folklore is... Folklore is when stories get told and passed down in certain regions. For instance, lets say that here is this tree, and that when someone touches it they immediately get healed form whatever it is that ails them. Another example (well at least in my mind) of folklore, is ghost stories. These ghost stories though have…See More
