Not a Hero, A Learner: Blog-A-Thon Day 5

Giving my time to this nonprofit is a way that I can be seen as doing my job correctly and become a person involved with their community. To me, it shouldn't be labeled "heroic," but rather, learning from heroes who are often silenced during troubled times. I am labeling myself as a the learner, not the hero. I've learned that dedicating time to a nonprofit doesn't necessarily mean volunteerism. There is so much more to this. In high school I was involved with student council. We were required…See More

Community Outreach: Blog-A-Thon Day 1

I began my involvement with nonprofits over a year ago. Prior to that, I was unaware of a lot of issues. The media encapsulated me with major stories. However, while I paid attention to what was in front of me, I always felt like I was missing something. That is when I was introduced to nonprofits. The organizations I immersed myself in adhered to issues that our city, our country, and our entire universe faced. I never realized that there was more than what the media told. What I saw in my…See More

Who I Am: Blog-A-Thon Day 4

Posted on March 4, 2016 at 9:55pm 0 Comments

I am a chica poderosa because I have embraced who I am. As I get older, I learn the trials and tribulations of adulthood and realize that as we grow, we learn.

I had a fun childhood. I was an only child and had a close group of friends and family. Elementary school was where all of my fondest memories took place. It was a time of laugher and adventure.

I have a habit of trying to gain acceptance, or a sense of belonging. As a child, I did not understand why I…

Blog-A-Thon Day 3: The Diversity of Feminism

Posted on March 3, 2016 at 8:19pm 0 Comments

Feminism is a term that can often have a negative connotation. Being a feminist, to me, is advocating for equality across all genders. The reason this term takes a negative tone is when people assume that it means women should be “higher” than men. It is about everyone being seen as equals. Being a feminist is connecting with others of your gender and wanting what’s best, what’s right. People often question why that word exists today. Women can drive; they can vote; they can go to…

Blog-A-Thon Day 2-The Inspirational Rosa Guerrero

Posted on March 2, 2016 at 10:23pm 0 Comments

I had the honor of interviewing Rosa Guerrero for a feature story through The University of Texas at El Paso’s online magazine. In honor of her 80th birthday, the story focused on her life and how she became a big inspiration for the Latino community.

For those of you who may not know, Rosa is known for her talent in Folklorico dancing. She lead several dance programs in El Paso and even took one of her dance groups to Washington D.C. Her colorful personality…
