Handy Dandy Baking Soda

Sodium bicarbonate (NaHCO3), commonly known as baking soda (not to be confused with sodium carbonate or washing soda, or baking powder, a mixture between baking soda and cream of tartar), is mostly looked upon as a cooking agent, but it has so many other uses! In cooking, it works as a leavening agent in replacement of yeast because exposure to heat and acids, such as its “best friend” vinegar, the powdery white substance produces gas, giving treats like pastries, bread, and pancakes their…See More

Things I Thought of

Imagine a meterstick. Both ends say “extreme” and the middle says “balanced.” There is no good or bad on this spectrum, just deviations from balance. This tool can be used to measure anything, but the mean, or balance, might be perceived differently by different people, like bad sampling leading to a faulty confidence interval. Only God can see the true mean (pun intended), the true balance, and the true measure of things. That is why we are not to judge.  But in everyday life, we need to…See More

Blog-a-thon: Why am I Proud to be a Latina?

In El Paso, I never credit the rich diversity of Mexican culture. Everyday, I hear the Spanish language and festive music, smell the greasy tacos and rice, and see the decorative murals, bright in color, adorned with scenes of fruit and gardens. It's easy to get bored of it all, when that is all that you see. I tend to take it for granted.  However, I once spent a whole summer in Arizona, with a group of girls around my age. There were about two other latinas, but the rest were…See More

Organic Livestock and Poultry Practices

Posted on June 11, 2017 at 1:19pm 0 Comments

Just recently, an amazing new policy was proposed- Organic Livestock and Poultry Practices. This policy would ensure that companies using the USDA Organic label refer to “humane “ treatment of animals. Yes, more work needs to be done before the standards require 100% humane treatment, but it is far better than what is required now.

Some of the new standards include:

  • A minimum space requirement…

Save the Wild Horses

Posted on June 11, 2017 at 1:00pm 0 Comments

The Department of the Interior's Bureau of Land Management is given the responsibility of the Wild Horse and Burro Program, which seeks to manage the wild equine population. There is a debate about whether these animals are invasive species, or native to America, as thousands of years ago, horses became extinct in America, and weren't reintroduced until the 1500s, when Spanish conquistadors brought in their mustangs. Although the landscape has probably changed over the…

Hi Taylor,

you asked me about the Women's March. It was in January 21 one day after Trump's Inauguration. It was a march to show that people around the country believed in equality for all genders. Here's more information on it https://www.womensmarch.com/global/

And yes, I heard about the Scientist March! I hope it really happens.
