Fortunate

"If you have food in your refrigerator,

clothes on your back, a roof over

your head and a place to sleep,

you are richer than 75% of this world."

My friend posted on Facebook this quote that she got from tumblr, I think. And it really made me think how fortunate we are. Sometimes we stress over so many little problems that we don't stop to look at how lucky we are. It's important to count our blessings and strive to help people that are less…

What to do? What to do?

In el paso we often have to make our own fun or search for things to keep us out of the house. Of course there is always the movies and eating out but after a while that can become pretty bland or costly. During the winter it is particularly difficult I believe because most music festivals are in spring. Well I recently looked into the plaza theatre and found that they are having quite a few music shows in february. Here is the link… Continue

Cesar Chavez Day

I don't know if you know who Cesar Chavez is but he is a very important figure to a lot of people that have been marginalized and oppressed. Chavez fought for migrant farm worker rights when no one cared about them. Been an farm worker himself, he knew of the long hard hours spent in the field with very little pay. He saw how farm workers were being treated unfair and in he knew it was not right. Though he lacked education (He had to drop out in 7th grade to help his family out and…

I'm Not Your "Mi'ja"

Last December my father showed me an column in a newspaper where I live where a young professional woman was appalled at the use of "mi'ja" in a professional environment. As some of us might know, "mi'ja" is an endearment term that literally translates to "my daughter." In her article, the young woman complained that many coworkers who are older than her had called her "mi'ja" which she found demeaning.

I really didn't think much of the topic and even told my dad that I…

They might be giants...

Recently my aunt and uncle showed me one of the cutest and quirkiest bands I think I have ever heard of. I instantly fell in love with They Might be Giants when I realized they sing only about science! I dont know about everyone else but I happen to be a huge bio nerd, it is one of my favorite subjects :) I really like that somewhere in the midst of music that mainly talks of promiscuity and other scandolous things a band that sings only about science can survive. Some of their best songs are… Continue

Tweez-ee it!

Last night before I went to bed I decided to try out my mother's tweez-ee it to remove some peach fuzz from my face. Ok imagine a little machine that moves incredibly fast and has tiny tweezers at the end- I was definitely in Ouch Town,USA. I like to believe I have a good threshold for pain but this little contraption made me cry. After I finished and was laying in bed I had to ask myself why did I put myself through that? As women we do a lot of tweezing, waxing, bleaching, and other painful… Continue

The State of the Union Address

Last night I had the opportunity to catch a glimpse of The State of the Union Address, where the U.S. president annually addresses Congress about the condition of the nation and outlines and priorities issues on the legislative agenda for the year.  I starting watching when he was speaking about the importance of education. He spoke about  how  teachers are some of the most influential people in our nation. They shape our minds and they have the ability to not just teach but inspire a…

There is no such thing as race...

Yesterday while I was cleaning I was thinking about when I was at the Denver Art Museum last summer. My friend and I went one afternoon while we were at a journalism convention.I remember seeing casta paintings at the museum and it brought back memories of one of my history classes, History of Colonial Latin America. Casta paintings are paintings that displayed the various castes in society in Latin America and indicated their socioeconomic status. For example, if you were a metizo…

Your Decisions Someone Elses Life

Although I don't know these young ladies their story has effected me and I think many people can learn from the story of Evalynn Rose and Jeannette Lazaro. Both these girls were 21 and were killed in an accident on Thursday January 20th. Both these girls and a couple of their friends had gone out to celebrate Evelynn's birthday which was on Wednesday and they both died in a car accident on Thursday. To me their story not only shows us how quickly life can be taken away from us but that we…

Food..Is it really what we think it is?

I recently saw a very powerful documentary by the name of Food inc. Recently I added it to my netflix que so I could finish watching it. The documentary talks about the hidden world of how our food is manufactured. There is this entire behind the scenes world with genetically manufactured vegetables and evil corn and chickens who have been made so top heavy they can no longer walk. We really dont know what is in our food anymore and after watching the documentary I think it really is time…

Odes!

My english teacher recently showed my class the work of Pablo Neruda who is most famous for creating (odes in spanish) to common household items. Reading his poetry made me realize that small things like chairs, eggs, and even socks are taken for granted. My favorite poem is Oda a la cebolla- I dont even really like onions but he really does make them sound delicious.…
