Is it possible to dominate two languages?
Only a few months after leaving home for Arizona State University, I went back to Nogales for my mom's birthday. During a conversation with my dad -- which tend to be intellectual -- I caught myself scrambling
for the correct way to say 'bachelor's degree' in Spanish. My dad leaned
back in his chair, let out a sarcastic laugh and said, "Nooo, ya se te
está olvidando el español a ti," which meant, "Oh boy, you're…

Everyone knows I am not a regular blogger. Yes I enjoy reading everyone else’s blogs and posting comments but I don’t really see my self as a “blogger”. I quote Rihanna’s
Hard “Where them bloggers girls at Where them bloggers girls at Where they
at, where they at, where they at” certainly not here, well so I thought somehow I got
convinced…

Recipe for culture
Mexicans don’t cook with measuring cups or spoons, organic herbs and spices, or extra-virgin olive oil.

preferably the one in the blue box — for holiday cooking.
Culinary traditions are one of the most important elements of culture. It…

Los Monologos de Vagina
I had the fortunate experience of attending the Monologos de Vagina, the Spanish-language version of the Vagina Monologues in Austin, TX this past weekend. Some of the monologues particulary the one about women and war was especially poignant because of its reference to the disappearing women in Ciudad Juarez. The monologue put a spotlight on a large group of women silently…

Musical Nostalgia
Well I have been back in Austin for a couple weeks now and have found it pretty difficult to write. I suppose part of it has to do with adapting to a new place and situation. Life here is quite different from the ejido life, obviously. Some people call it ‘culture shock.’ Although I speak some Spanish with friends, I now use English most of the time instead. My little house on the east side is…
