Is it possible to dominate two languages?

Only a few months after leaving home for Arizona State University, I went back to Nogales for my mom's birthday. During a conversation with my dad -- which tend to be intellectual -- I caught myself scrambling

for the correct way to say 'bachelor's degree' in Spanish. My dad leaned

back in his chair, let out a sarcastic laugh and said, "Nooo, ya se te

está olvidando el español a ti," which meant, "Oh boy, you're…

Latinos in Hollywood: Blog Series

It's that time of the year again. When the good, the bad, and the really bad have come together to entertain America. That's right. It's American Idol time. This week kicked off the first live shows of the season, and with Ellen DeGeneres replacing Paula Abdul. Big changes are happening on the show. Most of all for the contestants.

On Thursday, the top 24 finalists were whittled down to 20. Among those four to go were peppy Joe Muñoz and stylish Ashley Rodriguez. Although…

SICK SCIENCE: The Science of the Olympics

Talking about how science is all around us: has anyone been keeping up with the Winter Olympics?

I do at times feel disappointed when that's the only thing to watch, but once I start watching the coverage, I can't help but sit there enthralled. My favorite events are Ice Skating, Speed-skating, Snowboarding, and Ski jumps (I'm not sure what the last one is called but the athletes are on skis and jump off a ramp and fly off the slope for a considerable amount of meters. Oh wait, that is… Continue

They are just words, let's talk it out ;)

It has been almost two months into my Latinita clubs and these girls have taught me so much. Every time tuesday and thursday come around I have the biggest smile on my face excited to see the girls and listen to the stories they have to tell me. Although, the stories are not always what I want to hear. Sometimes they all come in their own little groups not saying a word, and I notice there is about one or two girls missing. I ask my self "What is going on here?"… Continue

Should you still talk your ex. after breaking up?

Today in the morning a radio station in El Paso, brought up the discussion that many people are still talking to their ex, even though they are in a new relationship. Many callers called in and gave their opinion.…

Living in a Virtual World and Immigration 101

Everyone knows I am not a regular blogger. Yes I enjoy reading everyone else’s blogs and posting comments but I don’t really see my self as a “blogger”. I quote Rihanna’s

Hard “Where them bloggers girls at Where them bloggers girls at Where they

at, where they at, where they at”
certainly not here, well so I thought somehow I got

convinced…

Recipe for culture

Mexicans don’t cook with measuring cups or spoons, organic herbs and spices, or extra-virgin olive oil.

Nah, we Mexicans follow some simpler guidelines: add a lot of consomé de pollo to everything, stock your pantry and fridge with at least nine types of hot sauces and chiles, and keep a ton of lard around —

preferably the one in the blue box — for holiday cooking.

Culinary traditions are one of the most important elements of culture. It…

El Paso Conference for Women

This weekend I had the privilege of attending the Biennial El Paso Conference for Women. Hosted by the city's Mayor, the two-day event offered a variety of workshops, seminars and informational tables aimed at empowering the female movers and shakers of El Paso.

Friday was the opening reception which featured a number of interesting guest speakers, a tasty dinner with melodic accompaniment by a quartet of the El Paso Youth Symphony, and of course a performance by Mayor John Cook on his… Continue

Los Monologos de Vagina

I had the fortunate experience of attending the Monologos de Vagina, the Spanish-language version of the Vagina Monologues in Austin, TX this past weekend. What a refreshing twist on the original I saw in NY City, read by its author Eve Ensler, when it opened in 1998. Some of the monologues particulary the one about women and war was especially poignant because of its reference to the disappearing women in Ciudad Juarez. The monologue put a spotlight on a large group of women silently…

Musical Nostalgia

Well I have been back in Austin for a couple weeks now and have found it pretty difficult to write. I suppose part of it has to do with adapting to a new place and situation. Life here is quite different from the ejido life, obviously. Some people call it ‘culture shock.’ Although I speak some Spanish with friends, I now use English most of the time instead. My little house on the east side is…
