Where I Come From

I moved to Austin four years ago for college. I came from a small town so everything seemed busy and exciting. I visited the state capitol for the first time and all of the other tourist sites. Studying in Austin was a dream come true. It’s a dream that I’m still living every day. And while most days I wake up and love where I am, other days I get another feeling—homesickness.

I used to feel homesick in the beginning, but in a different way. I wasn’t used to being away from my family…

College Chica

Being part of the College Chica was a great experience because I got to help out girls on how to prepare for college, I really liked the activities we made with the girls and how we got to tell them about what it is like to be in college and what experience we have and giving them advice. I saw they were really interested in knowing all about college and what it takes to go to college. This event we had was…

Experience of being a transfer student

For me transferring from El Paso Community College to the University of Texas at El Paso was something exciting because I decided to first start at El Paso Community College and I graduated with the Associates of Arts in Teaching. For me it was better to start first at a community College because it's a lot more cheaper and I got to graduate with my diploma and start working. My plan is to look for a job as a teacher's aid with my diploma , and then get my Bachelor's degree from the…

Time Management

Hello Ladies! I just thought that I would share with you all a bit of advice. Something that I did not learn until college was effective time management skills. When I started college I was at the time pledging for a sorority as well as working and keeping my grades up by studying. Oftentimes I would face my friends or family making me feel disappointed in myself because I was not spending the time with them that I would have liked to. What comes along with a lot of responsibility from work…

Latino movie 'Chef' on Netflix now!

I had been hearing great things about the movie 'Chef' for awhile but still hadn''t gotten around to seeing it yet. Then the other day while browsing Netflix I noticed it was streaming. I ended up watching it twice in a row! It's an uplifting, family-friendly film that not only features Hispanics [like Sofia Vergara and John Leguizamo] but stars them. The Spanish language and the different Hispanic cultures are present throughout the film but are never portrayed as "exotic". The Hispanic…

Hello Ladies!

Hello girls of Latina power! How has everyone been?? Great I hope. Its been a while. But my heart has never left from representing the importance of a Latina's power! It is 1:12am here in California and as I was online searching through any type of news, I came across a really interesting topic that in my eyes needs more attention. The importance of giving young Latina girls the chance to go to college. From what I read and seeing this type of thing a lot in my life time is…

Keeping Good Company

When I was in high school I was unsure of what I wanted to do with my life and which college I would attend. All I knew was that I had to start somewhere. I was not very involved in high school or any clubs that they offered but I always made sure to keep my grades up. What I was doing, which was not much was still a lot more than what my peers at the time were doing. For the most part most of my friends at the time were not interested in attending college and they were not used to…

Dance

Dance is an important part of my life since I was 3 years old I was enrolled to a Classical Ballet class, and it was amazing. I love it, this class help me to be more confident and independent. Since I was so little it helped me a lot in my development. My teacher was very surprised that even though I was so little I always wanted to do everything by my self,  like if the teacher wanted me to put my leg in a certain way and she tried to move me I always stopped her and do it by myself. In my…

Learning to Expect Expectations

In my experience, everything as soon as I've started school has been expectations set by other people. Teachers expect us to do our best and perform well academically, our peers tend to expect us to be sociable and always nice and pleasant, and our families expect us to reach our fullest potential, even when we aren't quite sure what that is yet.

I think it is partially due to these facts that I've become the person who puts the most pressure on myself to do these things. When I…
