Do you agree?

Very recently we had Dolores Huerta as a guest speaker in my school, she spoke in regards about education (what it really means to be 'educated'), education for women ( within their homes), and immigration. She brought up an interesting point on how having a degree does not really make you educated, it just makes you well prepare. In the English language being 'educated' means having some sort of degree. In contrast, in Spanish the word 'educado' means being polite, nice, and having good… Continue

BOOK REVIEW: Snow Flower and the Secret Fan

I recently read snow flower and the secret fan by Lisa see for my women's literature class. It has become one my favorite books, so I thought I would write a book review for it, since I very much recomend it. The novel is about lily and snow flower, two friends living in 18th century china. These two women becom laotong which is like a penpal sort of friendship, in order to be more eligible for a good marriage. In their society getting married was better than not getting married. Since women… Continue

My Journey to Boston (first WEEK of work)

I am exhausted. I never thought I'd be working eight hours a day at this internship. Oddly enough I love it. I am in love with what we do. I am intrigued by everything that is going on and the fast pace is just exhilarating.

First things first though. Lets start with last week and how it went. The last time I updated my blog was Tuesday and that night my brother, his wife and myself went to this place called Quincy Market in Boston. This place is Heaven for food lovers. It's…

Latina Girls & Eating Disorders

I came across an interesting article that cancels out the myth that only white girls have eating disorders and explains how Latina women are also affected by eating disorders. In fact, Latina women tend to express a higher dissatisfaction towards their body compared to girls from other racial backgrounds. Since Latina women seem to be the most unrepresented women in this country this article explains how Latina women are also affected by eating disorders. It caught my attention because it…

Blogger Series: Back Home For The Summer

I'm pretty sure I am living a double life. Spending the school year in Austin and the summers back home in El Paso, has become one of the biggest obstacles I faced when choosing to leave home for college. In Austin I am a motivated and involved student. In El Paso I am a lazy bum who sleeps and eats all day. Moving back and forth is something I still haven't gotten the hang of.

As I had this conversation with a friend who is in the same situation as me, we both agreed that we were…

Where did the time go?

My brother graduates from high school on Friday. Where did the time go? My parents have been blessed with three well-behaved, intelligent, sarcastic, and smart a** children. I say smart a** because the three of us ALWAYS find loop holes in every argument, which is terrible because it used to get us into even MORE trouble.  When I was 11 I wanted to paint my room red. Obviously, my mother wasn't jumping for joy. From her point of view saying no, because it was el color del…

Misrepresented "Bully Breeds" in Recent Media Coverage

A string of recent dog attacks in Las Cruces, New Mexico, including one that resulted in a two-year-old's death, have received a lot of media attention and gained plenty of reaction from the public.  Understandably, people are upset and afraid.  They do not feel safe taking walks or letting children play outside for fear of becoming the next dog attack victim.   Fair enough.  What concerns me is that the attention these stories receive in the media further stigmatize…

Be a patient/positive influence for troubled youth(latinas) in school

Hello Ladies I come to you today with another topic that has been striking my interest for quite some time. At this moment I am focusing on the younger generation of Latinas and other children. I have just returned from a vacation with family and took to heart a school that I happen to have come across. I saw young students from every color but more of the Latino and Latina race. Some of these children have either been abused or neglected and more. This school was amazingly willing to take…
