Listening to Latinas: Barriers to High School Graduation

To help keep young Latinas in school and on track for success, the National Women’s Law Center and the Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund went straight to the source: Latina students and the adults who work with them every day. Our new report, Listening to Latinas: Barriers to High School Graduation, explores the causes of the dropout crisis for Latinas and…

This past week I learned so much about racism and prejudice. I had to write an essay paper on unjust and just laws pertaining to the Catholic church and the USA government. Researching the topic was the most fun and I feel I have learned a lot. I learned that I am a better note taker than I thought, which is a good thing and I have been able to retain a lot information from class. I believe it will stay with me forever. My main challenge was Thursday night preparing for Friday classes. I had…

I must say, going back to school is something that I don't really understand. I like school...once I'm in it. Actually going back (especially the Sunday night before) is the difficult part. When I go to my classes and do all that, I settle in easily. I guess it's a mental thing.
Back in elementary, middle school, and high school, I liked to go back to school shopping. For the clothes!, but also for the supplies. Getting my new binders and thinking about how I would decorate it.…

What do I like most about going back to school? I would have to say the bustle and hustle that comes with the school year. I like to keep busy and we all know that once school starts life get crazy...but I rather be feeling the non-stop life then to be bored out of my mind:)

I like a lot of things about going back to school. Now that I am a Junior in college and have started taking classes that deal specifically with my major (Communication Studies with a Minor in Secondary Education) I have made a lot of new friends that are studying the same thing. I know that I am going to have a lot of them in my classes so it makes it more fun because we get to work on topics that we are interested in and also get to network. I love going to The University of Texas at El Paso…

I like going back to school to see all my friends :) School gives me a place to be free even though i'm stuck doing work i love being there at school. I can show off my clothing style, raise my grades, go to dance (cause i haven't been excersizing) haha School is not boring. It's a place to learn and communicate with others. Although i say this now, when i'm in school i know that sometime i will be counting down the hours till i go home :D ha

By the time I stood up, my legs were a little weak and I was a tad cold on what felt like one of the hottest days of the year. I had just finished watching
West Side Story, my third feature film in 9 hours. The day started out early, watching the much loved children's adventure
The Goonies, in the cramped, extremely dark theatre at the Plaza Theatre in El Paso, Tx (sorry yet again to the man whose foot I stepped on in an attempt to get to my seat). This day of the Plaza Classic…

For the next ten days in El Paso, Texas, the historic Plaza Theatre will be showcasing a slew of classic films. Some of the titles include
Gone With The Wind and
Marry Poppins. There is a movie to suit everyone's taste, and prices are cheap; ranging from free to $8. It's also a great way to support local happenings as well as have a look at modern masterpieces. The film will also hold special events such as "A Conversation with Nick Clooney". Nick Clooney is the father of George…

A couple Mondays ago, I had the opportunity to shadow at KVUE for a few hours. I got to sit in a meeting (heard the rundown of the 5 and 6:00 news), went on an interview with Noelle Newton, and sat behind the scenes of the 5:00 newscasts with editors and producers. It was really exciting, and although I was only there for a few hours, I did learn a few things along the way:
1. Info. and stories coming into the newsroom are way more juicy and scandalous than what's shown on TV. I…

Well to be honest i'm not Latina. Most people can think i am because the color of my skin can be slightly dark but i'm not. Although i'm not, my family still has parties and food that are very common to the Hispanic heritage but i do not mind :) The food, family, and parties are so fun i wouldn't mind being a Latina and i think so much can prove they can do anything they can, i don't doubt them for one minute :]

It's back-to-school time! One of my favorite commercials is a Staples one where there is a dad shopping for his kid's school supplies, and "It's the most wonderful time of the year" is playing.
Don't let your parents' excitement overshadow your own. True, school may drag on and teachers get ruthless with the amount of homework they give, but always keep in mind that children in this country are immeasurably privileged compared to children in third world countries. Some children can't go to…

I first heard of the movie The Kite Runner before I heard about the book, even though I still haven’t seen the movie. I caught myself between choosing a book in the airport and my eyes glazed across the title. I definitely recommend this book, for it shows the hardships and triumphs seen through a young boy and his childhood friend in Afghanistan. You can't help but remember glimpses of your own adventures as a child. It deals with government control and reveals an act the main character Amir…

I love
menudo and
queso fundido, adore Mariachi serenades, believe breaking a
piñata is the best way to celebrate a birthday, and think
cascarones (confetti eggs) are one of the greatest creations of all time. I remember when my mom would feed me something that didn't look appetizing I would give her the there's-no-way-in-this-lifetime-I-am-going-to-eat-that look and she would scream "
Pues, come caca!" followed by a "
Tonta!" — Haha, love it! Also, I do…
