Whenever I watch a movie that has a Latina in it, she tends to be the sex symbol. She is the one that wears the provocative clothing, and occasionally the one making sexual innuendos. But that’s just the women, what about the teens/ young adults? Well the most recent movie that I know of that has a teenage Latina is called Girl in Progress. It stars Eva Mendes as the mother and Cierra Ramirez as the daughter. It is about a 15 year old who decides that she wants to shortcut growing up by…Continue

I’ve always thought stereotypes are weird. Mostly because I don’t really know where they come from or how they get started. But stereotypes tend to have very long lives and constantly affect how we view and assess each other. I like to think that I’m pretty fair when it comes to viewing people, but many times I have to scold myself because I realize I’m trying to mentally stuff someone into a stereotypical box. It's rude, trying to fill in the blanks about someone with broad and inaccurate…Continue
I came across this Huffington Post article on the internet thought I should share it here. The article lists the best life lessons according to Tina Fey. For those of you who are not familiar with Tina Fey, she is an acclaimed Hollywood writer, producer and actress. And just like the article says, she is "seriously cool"!…Continue

Last week I sat on one of those awesome spinny chairs at the salon with sweaty hands and a knot in my stomach. I’d thought about this moment for months, looked up many haircut examples on pinterest and tumblr, and read a number of articles on the hot hair trends of 2013. Finally I was doing it. I was going to make the cut!
By ‘the cut,’ I mean lopping off my below the shoulder hair to a short, just below the…Continue
I'm busy. I barely have time to sit down and think. Usually, I love staying busy but this semester, I feel guilty for not making the time to work out regularly.
I've lost track of how many times I've started the Insanity videos. I'm starting tomorrow again and this time I'm determined to complete the whole 60 days. I feel like since it's in writing for all of you to witness, I have to keep my word.
I think the hardest part about working out is actually getting up to go to the…Continue

Growing up, I was never really a "girly girl." I never even wore sandals to school until I was a sophomore in high school. Prior to that, sneakers and Jordan slides were the only shoes I had. Now that I'm older, I love dressing up but for some reason, I'm still not a huge fan of makeup. Don't get me wrong, I do wear it but I'd say more often than not, you'll find me with a naked face. I'm perfectly fine with that.
In my makeup bag, you will find: eye shadow, a bunch of chapsticks, a…Continue
I’ve never really been much of a fitness person, but I’ve always ran as my hobby. About a month ago my cousin and her boyfriend, who have participated in various marathons, invited me to go to the Color Run with them. I was naturally overcome with hesitation. Yes, I used to be a cross country runner in middle school and the past two years of high school, but running with them could be presented as quite a…Continue

A couple of weeks ago, Nina Davuluri was crowned Miss America in Atlantic City. Nina is a beautiful Indian-American woman. Yes, she's of Indian heritage. Did you pause to re-read that? No, I think you read correctly. Davuluri is the first woman of Indian descent to be crowned Miss America. And if you keep up with the news, you'll also already know that a lot of Americans are outraged by this. About a week ago, after the crowning of Davuluri, Twitter exploded with racist reactions against…Continue

Last week, I experienced for the first time in my college career, the "solo dinner." My college has just one cafeteria, an administrative effort to facilitate a sense of community by breaking bread under one roof. Between 430 and 8pm, students flock to fill up on the less than filling, mediocre food that constitutes a college meal. Texts are sent all day long, confirming lunch and dinner plans. This particular day, I did not feel like turning dinner into a social event. I did not want to…Continue
My music taste has shifted. I can't listen to rock music without feelings of sadness. Don't get me wrong, I grew up with rock music all my life. I liked it, loved it or so I thought.
So here it goes:
I was sitting in my corner of the house, jamming out to My Chemical Romance, they were a favorite of mine at the age of thirteen, when I suddenly found myself actually singing along to lyrics that go a little something like this: "I'm not okay...You wear me out." It's song about a…Continue
This past weekend was all that I needed and more. This semester has been extremely busy for me due to 15 hours of school, 30 hours/wk working at a grocery store and 13 hours/wk interning at the office. Needless to say, a vacation was definitely the stress reliever I was looking for.
Two weeks ago, my friend, Laura (who is the most spontaneous person I've ever known), asked me if I wanted to go to New Orleans at the end of September (for no particular reason at all other than the fact…Continue
I watched this Thai commercial only last week. It's nothing new. But I was captivated by it. So now, I'm determined to spread the word about it's incredible message.
In just three minutes, the Thai telecommunications conglomerate True created a thoughtful tearjerker commercial regarding the idea of selfless giving. This clip managed to do what Hollywood films struggles to do in two hours: make people cry!
When I was watching this video, I kept…Continue
So my birthday is coming up next week and typically people will continually ask "What do you want for your birthday?" (As a timid child I never really liked answering that question, even if I did want something) But I seem to find that the older I get, the less I really want material "stuff". Yeah of course everybody likes gifts (who doesn't?), especially unexpected ones from your significant other or when your parents actually buy you something cool and not the knit sweater your mom swore…Continue
As a fan of healthy eating and exercise, I’ve made every effort to stay informed on the nutrition front. After reading countless blogs and articles on “Is Peanut Butter Really Bad For You?” and dropping in on a few nutrition classes, I made the decision to bring the information in the mail by subscribing to Women’s Health. However, this decision has been slightly bittersweet.

Have you ever been in class assinged to a group with or sitting next to a person who doesnt speak the same language you do or who doesnt speak english bery well? If you let it, things can get very frustrating. They dont have to be though. One has to learn that being understanding and practicing empathy is a part of life, and yes can be a part of group projects too. First of all, the fact that they a person doesnt speak the same language you do makes them no less intelligent than yourself.…Continue
