Teen Reporter Voice- Ignoring the Goss. It's Possible!!

Don’t Try Out For the Play, Be an Audience Member. Or better yet, ignore it!

It’s hard to stay out of drama because that is what high school revolves around. It’s not about staying out of it; it’s more about learning how to handle it because drama will be a part of life as long as humans are involved. The easiest thing to do is just smile and be an audience member. Don't sign up for the Drama Club. Simply observe and reply with “uh-huh” and “mhm”. You just need to recognize… Continue

Latinitas University--More to visit in Mexico than Tijuana

The topic in my Sociology class a few weeks ago was over global inequality and stereotypes, which reminded me of a common generalization of Mexico that I've come across pretty often here in Austin.

For most people, the frequent misconception about Mexico is one of a country that resembles its border cities: dirty, crowded, desperate, and poor. I'm embarrassed to say that I once ignorantly thought the same way. When I ventured further into Mexico for the first time, past the border… Continue

Book Review:

Twilight is the book im reviewing. The author is Stephenie Meyer. I would rate the book from 1- 5 stars, I would give it 5 stars. The book is about this girl named Bella. She falls in love with a vampire named Eduard. The thing I like from the book is that it gives a lot, but great description. Not just any description just, like, so good it makes you see it in your head or imagine it as real. I would recommend all her other books, which i read 3 of. ( Twilight, New Moon, Eclipse, and Breaking… Continue

Xmas Cheer and song! Where did I leave my tamal?

Ok...I have dedicated my last hours to sprucing up my social networking. It's a work in progress....

Before I go, I wanted to get into the festivities. Since tofu turkey day is over and crazy Friday is ending, Thank the Gods!

I felt like a little Xmas cheer...yay...not all at once please. ;p

Last year around this time I was heading out of the Texas globe and into a much bigger world. Let's just say New year's in China,on a boat, in the freezing weather, and no… Continue

Latinitas Hot Topic (Bilingual/bilingüe): Undocumented Youth/ Niños Indocumentados

Can you imagine being 14 years old and leaving your family to find a new home in another country? Imagine traveling for months alone with only a backpack crossing countries by whatever means of transportation you can find by hitchhiking, being crammed into a van or riding inside the trunk of car. That is exactly what happens to thousands of young immigrants who travel from Latin America to the United States of America for better way of life. When they finally make the journey to the U.S. and… Continue

The Uncomfortable Silence that is my intro!

Hola!

Thought a little introduction would be nice, you know to ease over the uncomfortable silence one gets….especially when you’ve just sneaked into an ongoing conversation and your like, “HI!” and you can’t help but stand around trying to come up with something witty, and just as you think you’ve thought of something, someone turns around and asks you a question you completely do not know the answer to.

Then there is more uncomfortable silence, followed by some quirky facial… Continue

Positive Change

Change is not always bad. I am actually experiencing a few changes myself. I use to have long beautiful hair that went past my shoulders. I have just recently got my hair cut to where it is a centimeter above my shoulders. I have also decided to cut my hair to where now I have bangs. The last time I had bangs I was seven years old. My brother asked me why did I cut it, and I simple replied “Because I wanted to and I felt like it was time for a change.”

I am in the process of trying to… Continue

Latinitas Media Watch: Latinita for President

Hillary Clinton paved the way for women to run for the highest office in this country. But, looking at the sexist media coverage of her campaign just reinforced that the glass ceiling still exists for women in the U.S.A. Whether you call yourself a feminist or not, you probably can't deny that the media treated Hillary differently than her male counterparts. She was scrutinized for her voice, emotions and fashion style. When she spoke firmly with confidence, she was attacked as a B@&%! When… Continue

Latinitas University--Myths for the two of us.

This morning on the Seattle radio station KEXP 90.3 (thank God for live streaming), there was a program on the classic Latino myth of La Llorona. In my six-year-old heyday of throwing temper tantrums, my mother used to tell me the at once tragic, sensual, and frightening story of La Llorona in order to get me to stop screaming. The tale, with too many versions now to count, is, in a nutshell, about a jilted lover who drowns her children, and is forever cursed to moan and wail about their death… Continue

Obamanos at last!

Did anyone else notice Obama's nod to all the Latinos in the United States that voted for him, that wanted Hillary, but hated the Bush/McCain chain more, with his new (but not new to the United Farm Workers) mantra: "yes, we can," or to those of us who have heard it spoken in its native tongue: "Si se puede!" It was definitely a grateful and necessary thanks because Latinitas - you are clearly the new powerful force in U.S. elections!!!! Wow, it's good to feel inspired rather than that tragic,… Continue

When I hear feminism

When I hear feminism....

I think of the millions of women fighting for the cause. I think of high heeled shoes standing ground on a decision. I think of ribbons and bows tied together for values. I think of miracles in soft scented hands. I think of lipstick and gloss floating in the air to speak up in the crowd. Arms raised, shoulders pushed back, standing tall and proud. When I hear feminism, it is the sound of pens to the paper, the clutter of heels on the pavement, wind blowing through… Continue

Latinitas University--Who's It Gonna Be?

It's really hard to believe that next week we'll know who the next president will be. This is what a lot of people have been waiting for for four years, and a lot have been waiting eight.

Election time on a college campus makes things more exciting--idealistic (and jaded) youth are casting their first votes ever and officially establishing themselves as active citizens of the United States. Passionate students line the main malls, speakerphones and campaign signs in hand, urging… Continue

Latinitas University--Hello, Thank You, and You're Welcome

Hello lovely Latinitas regulars! I'm a new blogger around here so I figured I should provide you with an introduction to me before I start blogging regularly.

Here are the basic facts:

My name is Rachel Taliaferro, and I'm a freshman at UT Austin hoping to major in magazine journalism. Home is in Mission, about five hours south of Austin, in an area known as the Valley (Why? I'm not sure. It isn't even a real valley. But whatever.).

Now on to something… Continue

Latinitas Media Watch - Is Eva Longoria fat??

"Absolutely not!" was my first reaction when I read an article calling her fat. When did size 0 become fat? What is our world coming to when someone as petite as Eva is considered too big? After gaining seven pounds, Eva Longoria has been attacked for her full figure. Despite the negative media attention, she proudly displayed her curvier figure in the November issue of Allure.

She spoke out about the negative hype: "I stopped working out and gained about seven pounds over the… Continue

Girl vs. Wild

When is the last time you walked barefoot on the grass, paused your day to enjoy the sunset, or bothered to smell the fresh scent of plants after a good rain? In the city, we live in a concrete and metal world where trees and plants have been replaced with buildings and houses and natural landscaping with streets and highways. Sometimes it can be hard to escape from the stresses and worries of the city life.

I love to spend time outdoors. While many girls would rather hang out in the… Continue
