Cultures Are Not Trends

Fashion trends are fluid. They change every season as soon as the fashion industry decides what's in and out.

While I'm not a fashionista, I do enjoy a stylish look every now and then. There are some very cute patterns and styles out there, but there are also offensive trends. First let me begin with defining cultural appropriation, according to this article…

They are JP, Reyna, Frankie, Ludwin, Jimmy, Eliza, Taylor, and Rico. They are musicians, poets, and athletes in addition to being close-knit friends, and per the Dominican standard, they are bursting with “love for everyone.” …

Cherish, Teach and Stop Bullying

The month of October is dedicated to raising awareness for bullying and how to stop it. It also happens to be Hispanic Heritage month. One might not think that heritage/culture plus bullying in the same sentence would equal anything uplifting, but just last week I came across an article on Yahoo! about a case of culture-related bullying that had a happy ending that I just had to share.…

Incredibly Mexicana: a food induced realization

Recently, I decided I should make flautas for my new roommates. This was a real eye opening experience for me. It sounds like a regular experience. However, it was not. As I ran from room to room trying to shut off the fire alarms in my apartment, I felt strong and proud as I realized that I am incredibly Mexican. I had been…

Neon Desert Music Festival

As I entered the gates to the first ever music festival in El Paso (on left), I remembered that one fateful Tuesday morning when I was assigned to head out for a City Council Meeting to cover a story. Not the most interesting story I've gotten but I took it and was excited to attend my first city council meeting.

Unbeknownst to me was what I was about to hear during the meeting that would change the course of this past weekend.

A group of El Paso natives…

Sushi for the picky eater

So I have a problem....with food.

I love food so that's not a problem.

My problem is that I'm picky about food. I don't like to try new things when it comes to food and I'm picky about the food that I do eat.

This is very unlike how I am in other aspects, in fact I think of myself of wanting to try new things and being open-minded. Yet food is a different story.

I think about how will I ever get to travel the world and explore new cultures if I'm not…

Korean dramas vs. novelas

I was listening to Pandora while I was getting ready (it was on the "Julieta Venegas" station - one of my favorites) and there was a little beat in the beginning of one of the songs that triggered my memory. It reminded me of a Korean drama that I watched last year and fell in love with called "My Girl." The reason that it reminded me of "My Girl" was because that little beat was used in the drama when the characters were doing something funny or silly.

First of…

Motorcycle Diaries

Yesterday I watched The Motorcycle Diaries or Diarios de Motocicleta with a friend. I had already watched it before a few years ago and I really liked it. My friend had never seen it and I thought he would like it we watched it.

I remember when I watched it the first time. I heard about it from a friend. He had been moved by the film and well I was interested. The movie is based on the memoirs of Ernesto "Che" Guevara. Che and his friend are young adventure seeking…

Latina Pride

By Latinitas Teen Reporters

Being a Latina is an amazing thing that many of us take for granted. We are a unique people because of our rich tradition and culture. I love being a Latina because of how loving, warm, and welcoming our culture is. We have such a colorful culture full of life and energy. I especially love being a Latina because many people think that the Latino culture in general cant do much. I’ve heard people… Continue

Recipes to My History

I don't remember my mom. You see, she died when I was a toddler from cancer. I makes me kinda sad that I was too young to have any memories of her. I grew up with my tia instead. Even though I can't remember her, I've started to feel more connected to my mamacita recently. My Tia has been giving me cooking lessons and she is teaching me some of my mom's old recipes. To me, it is really cool that I can connect with my mom who passed away by cooking the same things she used to make. I've learned… Continue
