Women on the BIG and little screen: How they are represented differently

It's 1925. You're sitting at home (yet again) with your mother as she shows you how to make a home-cooked meal for your father. And once again you ask the question you always ask her in times like this: and although you know the answer, you still bother to ask the question. "Why do we have to do this? Why can't dad or my brothers stay home for once?" You already know the answer, she replies with the ever-popular phrase "A woman's place is in the kitchen".

This was just the…

Teenage Angst at 21

I successfully survived the horror years of teenage hormones about about seven years ago. It was always my goal throughout my teens to be Ms. Mature and I always tried to be the better person or stay away from situations that I knew would bring trouble. I find myself today as a 21-year-old college lady that stands alone on a campus full of diversity, a sea of people who have lived and learned from past experiences."That's just the way things are," is often the feedback I receive when I…

Taking His Last Name: Yay or Nay?

I'm 23, far from getting married, but I have thought about this issue before: whether to someday take my husband's last name or keep my own. Growing up, I fantasized my wedding - I would marry my favorite Beatles member (impossible dreams of mine) and become Mrs. Lennon. I was always so intrigued by the fact that my last name would someday change; the possibilities are endless. Then, I grew up. Weddings no longer seem magical to me, and the only thing I'm looking forward to (about…

Never Settle for the Less

When I was younger, I thought I would be married and have children right after finishing college. It was an ideal for me. This ideal remains a wish that is maybe way long overdue. Or is it?

For better or for worse, college has been my number one priority. I am twenty-four years old and have never had a meaningful passionate relationship with another human being. I fret about it constantly but am thankful that I have not a good majority of the time.

I am an accomplished woman…

My Zen Moment...

One spring afternoon in May, I was walking back to my dorm room feeling uncharacteristically calm. I decided to sit on a grassy hill riddled with dandelions. I closed my eyes and took pleasure in the sensation of the late afternoon sun warming my eyelids. I instantly felt relaxed and  tuned into the outdoorsy sounds that are usually muted by the  overactive mind. I heard, with unusual crispness, some natural sounds like the wind whizzing through the leaves in the tress, and some less…

Modern Chivalry

I was on Facebook last night and I found that my friend's status said something close to "Why can't men be more chivalrous?" A few guys started commenting and arguing that it's women's fault that men are no longer chivalrous. One guy mentioned that women don't like it when men open the door.

I personally don't believe any woman is against courtesy As a woman I appreciate a man who is…

Is interracial dating dangerous to maintaining one's culture?

Interracial dating may have been a new idea to our grandparents, but today is nowhere near unheard of by our generation. I was just reading an article the other day stating that more than ever of dating Latinas are in interracial relationships with non-Latino men. With the increase of interracial couples, it’s not surprising that more than half of young Americans are multicultural themselves. For me our generation’s willingness to accept interracial relationships mirrors the progress that we… Continue

Why Divorce Worked for Us

I came across an article today that discussed the divorce rate in the U.S. and which cities had the highest numbers. Both Indiana and Florida topped the chart.

This got me to thinking about how many children these people getting divorces have, as well as the reasons for the failure of marriages.

I was eight years old when my parents got divorced. However, I must say I'm pretty glad they did. I can assure you that my case differs entirely from that of anyone i've ever met who is either… Continue

Hot Topic: Interracial Dating

Love is a complicated thing. It is a mystery to me and always will be. There are people who don't understand it so much that they sort of avoid the whole thing, and then there are people who don't really care about understanding it and never really wait for it, they just jump right in. There are so many factors involved that it's impossible to say what makes a relationship work. And what is the definition of a "working" relationship? Ever seen those interviews with celebrities where they ask… Continue
