1. Gertrudis Boca Negra:
Gertrudis was born in Michoacán, Mexico and read widely during her youth. When the fight for Mexico’s independence began, she was quick to support the country in which she was born in. Gertrudis served as a messenger for the regions of Pazcuaro and Tacambaro (keeping these principal locations of the rebellion in contact) during the revolution. During her time in Pazcuaro she helped capture the city and was herself captured by the Spanish…

The Smile
By: Vasti Carrion
the hair became brittle,
and the smile became brighter
the hair lost it's brightness,
and the smile grew wider
skin lost elasticity
and the smile became prouder.
(a poem written for my poetry class this semester). : )

I often hear Latina women getting stereotyped with having dark hair and eyes, wide hips, being "sexy", loud among other things. Well, there is a new stereotype around girls! And it's that of how just because most of us didn't learn English as a native language, people seem to think that we either need help or can not write well in English. That has been the case with me and my friend Maria (so far in our college experience). In our poetry class, after my friend Maria read her poem out loud…

In developing countries in Latin America, the percentages of students that attend college are very low.
It is not to say that they do not want to attend or finish their secondary education and attend college, but the government does not provide the opportunities for higher education. In Mexico, most of the…

My history professor seemed nice at first, but as they always say, looks can be deceiving. I saw her true colors from the moment an African-American student came in, he was interested in the class and was wondering if he could “add it.” He asked her and she played dumb and pretended not to hear him. She likes to be addressed as “Dr.” because she has a PhD. But surprisingly despite with her years of being in school and presumably analyzing literature of all sorts, she couldn’t figure out what…

Like most other Latinitas I started school again and so far I like it. I'm taking 16 units and my classes consist of a literature course in Mythology and as a Classics major, I love it! I'm also taking an ancient civilization course and I'm pretty excited to read Ancient Egyptian literature, since I have never read any .... it will be something very new. I'm also taking my first Biology course which I'm still ambivalent about it, I'm not so sure if I like it so far. I feel a bit…

If you love to write and are looking for ways to improve your resume for college or simply looking to improve your resume you’ve clicked to the right blog. While surfing online I encountered myself with plenty of publishing opportunities that I think you might be interested in (if you love to write). It's been one month since my last final, yet I am still not on "vacation." This summer I decided to take a summer intensive course and so, this has kept quite busy. It's pretty sad to have all of these plans for summer and see nearly none getting accomplished. I was being unrealistic, though, on thinking I would get to read, draw or spend more time with my family. In the bright side, I am enjoying the accumulation of new knowledge. The course that I am taking is a literature course with a…
