I thought Obama's back to school speech was effective because it was directed to students and encouraged them to take adavantage of their education because it is their key to success. Using personal examples as well as some from some students struggling with with other issues and are still succeeding in school was a good way to motivate not only children but any student whether they're in elementary, middle, high school, or college.
Telling students that not everyone will become a…

I like a lot of things about going back to school. Now that I am a Junior in college and have started taking classes that deal specifically with my major (Communication Studies with a Minor in Secondary Education) I have made a lot of new friends that are studying the same thing. I know that I am going to have a lot of them in my classes so it makes it more fun because we get to work on topics that we are interested in and also get to network. I love going to The University of Texas at El Paso…

I was born in Mexico but have lived in Texas most of my life. My parents are not completely against it, but do not really believe in interracial dating. A while ago, I dated an African American for some time but because it ended up being a long distance relationship my parents didn't make a big deal out of it. I believe that if two people are interested in each other then their race shouldn't interfere in their relationship. With my experience, I realized that our backgrounds and the way we…

This year I celebrated the 4th of Julio since the 3rd. My boyfriend and I watched the El Paso Diablos fireworks at Transmountain with a lot of other El Pasoans. The 4th I was with my family for a while, then with my boyfriend's family, then we watched the fireworks with my family at a park. We ate some good food, had fun, and later met up with some of my friends to watch some more fireworks. It was one of the best Independence Day celebrations I've experienced since I moved to El Paso 14 years…

There are sooo many things that make my mom special! First of all she is a wonderful mother and friend to me and my 3 sisters. She dropped out of school at age 16 to work at a bank and help out her family until age 20 when she married my dad. For 16 years she dedicated her life to all of us making sure we always had everything we needed. When we moved to El Paso, Tx she started working and is now certified in various computer programs and is an administrative secretary at Region 19. She is very…

I do support the Dream Act because I think education should be available to everyone and if U.S. Citizenship can be obtained because of that, we would open doors to those are looking for opportunities here in the U.S. If they were raised here why should we deny them the opportunity to continue their education or serve in the military? In-state tuition should be available to them as well to receive equal opportunity.

Recently I've become more aware of our environment and what we can do to preserve it. I encourage my family to recycle and I'm in charge of taking out the recycling bin at my house. A few weeks ago we had a Student Leadership Conference at UTEP and as a gift we received a bag with the recycling logo with a Miner Pick in the middle. I have found it useful to carry my things during those days I don't take many books to school. A lot of students have told me they like it and it's a good way of…

When I moved to El Paso in July of 1995 from Veracruz, MX I heard of her tragic death and began listening to her music. I unfortunately didn't know who she was until after she was murdered but I am sure that if she was still alive today she would continue to enlighten us with her music. I admire her determination to learn Spanish, which she did, and make it in the entertainment business.

I think volunteer work is very important. Not only do employers look at that when you are applying for a job, but it's a great feeling after you know you've done something to help others out. I love writing for Latinitas because it gives girls a chance to relate to the stories and feel like they're not alone. I love to write so it makes it that much better. I'm also a UTEP Disney College Program Campus Representative. I volunteer to recruit other students to take advantage in this awesome…

Cesar Chavez is an inspiration to keep going. He has inspired many people to do great things and to not give up. We should follow his example when we feel like we can't do something anymore and also to give back to our community. We had the day off at school to celebrate his birthday so thanks for that too Cesar Chavez! =]

There are many women I admire including my mom, grandmas, sisters and so on. Recently I had to write a feature story for class about someone I thought had done something out of the ordinary. Her name is Olivia Chavez and she is my mom's boss. Though I have only known Olivia for a few years I admire her for her many achievements. She has dedicated her life to working with the visually impaired. She loves to travel, hike, and ski. Not only that but one of her hobbies is listening to music that…

I consider myself a Chris Brown and Rhianna fan. I like listening to their songs and was very disappointed when I heard of what had happened last month. Because they are celebrities it was obvious this would become a huge scandal which I think is very unfortunate. There have been a lot of rumors on what really happened and in my opinion there are three sides to the story: what she said, what he said, and the truth. We have no right to judge an individual but I do think that the act of violence…

I would like to really live the typical day in the life of the president. From the moment he gets up, to eating breakfast, attending all of the meetings, and so on. It would be an opportunity to be in his shoes and see what he goes through on a daily basis. Problems like fixing the economy, and figuring out how to make health care available at a reasonable price for U.S. citizens is something that can't be fixed in a day, but I would give my imput to try to improve the situation. If it were…
