Higher Education

Last week the girls at Club Latinitas were taught about higher education and what it means to get a degree. I had the girls write in their journals to reflect on higher education and what they wanted to be when they grow up. Here is Paula's entry:

"It is important to go to college because you would get a better education and you get better chances to be what you want. I would want to be an actor. I would be an actress because it would be alot of fun. I have learned that your education…

If I Were President....

This past week at Club Esperanza Acosta Moreno, the girls learned more about the presidential campaign and politics. We asked the girls what would they do if they were president, and here are their responses:

"If I were elected president, I would make there be no more physical education anymore. The gas price would be 50 cents per gallon. There would be dance class all day." -Elena

"If I was president the changes I would make are to stop the war, lower tax and gas prices, and…

A Week Without Violence

Even though this post is a bit late, I feel it is important to share what the girls at Club Esperanza Acosta Moreno came with on these topics.

The first topic Elena, Draven, and Madison wrote about was why there is still violence against women today. Here are the reasons they came up with:

-Men think they are more powerful.

-Men think they are better than women.

-Men think they are better at sports.

-Men learn from parents.

-Men learn from tv and…

Red Ribbon Week

With Red Ribbon Week coming up this week, I asked the girls at the Esperanza Acosta Moreno club a few questions, and here are their responses:

1. What can parents do to protect their children from using drugs?

"Parents can talk to children about what drugs do, drugs are, and how bad they are." -Marina

"Parents can make sure that their kids don't choose bad friends, and they can talk to their kids so they won't use drugs to hide their feelings."…

What the Esperanza Acosta Moreno club says about being Latina

Two weeks ago the girls at the Esperanza Acosta Moreno club answered a few questions about being Latina. Here are some responses to the questions:

1. Why are you proud to be Latinita?

"I am proud to be Latinita because of the food." -Alba

"I am glad to be a Latinita because I can speak Spanish. Speaking Spanish is fun!" -Elena

2. Why do you think Latinas make strong leaders?

"Ladies are smart." -Holli

"They share…

Favorite Hispanic Tradition

As I think about all the wonderful traditions our culture has, my favorite has to involve food. We make great dishes that vary from sweet to spicy. My favorite traditional dish is chile con queso. In my family, we make queso for every occasion throughout the year. We have it for birthday parties, BBQ's, and for the holidays. When I think of Thanksgiving everyone talks about cranberry sauce and etc., but for me its the chile con queso. I end up pouring that yummy cheese over my burger, or…

Something I appreciate

In my life I am grateful for many things, and little situations trigger me to remember that. Today it was appreciating a friend of mine. I woke up with the “Sexy and I know it” song stuck in my head, particularly the part where they sing “wiggle wiggle wiggle wiggle wiggle yeah!” I have a friend whose last name is Wiggs, and everyone calls him Wiggy. I instantly thought of him, and texted him this morning that I heard the song and thought of him. We continued talking and it’s amazing how we…

My past two weeks

I haven’t posted a blog these past two weeks, due to the summer camp we had here at Latinitas. I didn’t realize how busy I would be, how tired I would be, and how stressed out I would be. These girls were a handful, but it was worth it. I had to say I learned a few things from these girls, and it helped me appreciate them. But most of all, it felt well helping these girls and watching them have fun. They got to do arts and crafts, go on field trips, and to listen to different guest speakers.…

Why it's okay to be single

Ladies let’s face it, we’ve all day dreamed about a boy, had a crush, and wish a certain boy can be ours. One of the worse feelings in the world is being lonely, or wishing you were with someone. I’ve had those moments and wonder why on earth things are the way they are. I am 20 years old now, and lately my family and friends have been getting married and having babies. It leaves many questions like when will I find a guy, and when will it be my turn. While it’s something I still…

Thoughts on Dating. Any Input?

Hey everyone,

Well I want to write a blog entry (or even a few entries) on dating. Dating today is different and hard compared to what my parents tell me. My experiences have been unique, enjoyable, and not so great. I know the pressure you feel by boys, friends, family, and the media.

My question is are there any specific topics you ladies want covered? Maybe you experienced a situation and wasn't sure what to do, or maybe you got some good advice that you want everyone to…

El Paso, TX

El Paso- many things can be said about this city. But, I hear a lot of my friends saying they hate it and they want to move. El Paso may be dry and hot- but no matter where you move, every city will have its flaws (Seattle-Always raining!). I even complain about it too, but in the end I appreciate living here because I get to be here with my friends and family. And of course, I am not the only…

Take the time to think

Yesterday I went to the gym as usual but I did a different workout than I usually do- in fact I had never done this workout before, but I found it and wanted to try it out. Halfway through, I was so sweaty and tired that I wanted to give up. Well I completed the workout, and I went home and showered. While in the shower, I was thinking about why I even started working out in the first place. Late last year, I was very stressed out and depressed. I had just graduated with my…

My Unique Experience

In the movie Back to the Future, one of the characters says “If you put your mind to it, you can accomplish anything.” Even though it is a movie quote, I live by it, and I have proof that it applies to me. I went to Mission Early College High School, and my life changed. An Early College High School is a high school where you go and take high school classes and college classes at the same time, so that at the end of the four years you receive both your high school diploma and Associates…
