Dis txts r NOT real wrds
I was going over a lesson at one of my Latinitas club one afternoon that involved writing a paragraph. One of my girls finished hers rather quickly and as I read over it, I was a little bit in shock. I always knew writing complete sentences could be an issue but suddenly I discovered kids forgot how to write complete words! She knows very well how to spell but she said it was easier to "chat" her paragraph.
I mean come on, how much time/energy can you possibly save from removing the "yo" from "your" in your paper?
U can b better!
I mean don't get me wrong girls. I know that we live in a fast-paced world full of quick texts and even faster emails. I know you have to update all of your friends of that burger you just ate or the cool top you just bought. I also know, however, that texting is making you lazy.
How did we get to this point? Oh yeah, we're on our phones 24 of the 24 hours in the day, me included!
How do we encourage you girls to stop using this text talk when writing in a classroom? That I need a little help in because it's really up to you. YOU get to choose how to write when you're handed paper and told to write about what you're thankful for or to write a persuasive essay. All teachers talk about the importance of having voice in your papers. Voice comes through your writing so your readers can hear what you're trying to say but when you write that "U will c ur famly laterz" all I'm hearing is a rather confused girl and it leaves me confused.
SO, remember it's okay to text/chat short words! Go ahead, it saves time but when you get down to business in a class, write complete words or sentences. You have a beautiful voice so let me hear it!
