
It's that time of the month again where our menstrual cycle begins to act up and causes us go ballistic, but have you ever imagined it can also be blamed for unusual stress or pain in our dental gums? That's right, according to studies conducted by Charlene Krejci at Case Western Reserve University School of Dental Medicine, "the gingival tissues have lots of estrogen receptors that respond to hormonal fluctuations." This means that our gums can be the warning sign of deeper and more serious health issues like bone loss, heart disease, and fetal death and pre-term births. A week before we begin our period, we have to be super keen when it comes to brushing our teeth so that we can avoid the extra pain of bruised and inflamed gums. Imagine having to deal with menstrual cramps AND swollen gums?! It's tough being a girls sometimes.
