Blog Article from CNN

A couple months ago, the UT-Austin Greek system were in the national news for Mexican-themed parties. I wasn't really concerned with the theme since I was not really offended as much. The only thing that offended me about the parties was the one about border crossing.

The reason that the border crossing party theme offended me was because my mom had crossed the border a few times and she had told me all the horrible stories for her to get here. I understand that the Mexican/Hispanic culture is a lot of fun, but people should just only use a few parts of the culture.

A few days ago, I read an article about how the Chi Omega sorority at Penn State had a Mexican-themed party. I saw nothing of it until I saw the photo. Two of the girls held signs that said "Will mow lawn for weed + beer." while the other sign said: "I don't cut grass. I smoke it." That offended be extremely.

Do they not know that there is currently a drug war going on in Mexico? Being from Brownsville, I've seen how the drug war in Mexico has affected the United States. Heck, I almost lost my mother to people from the cartel. The drug war is nothing to be made fun off. It's a serious problem going on that affects the daily lives on many people in the United States. I wish these girls would have realize that the signs they held were offensive not that they were making fun of a culture but that they were offensive to those who have to deal with the drug war. I might be Mexican American but I don't do drugs. Yet, the drug war has had a huge impact in my life.

I hope these girls take a diversity class to learn how they might not be insulting a culture, but insulting a problem that affects a lot of people.
