In the United States, prom is one of the biggest events that'll happen during your high school career. To actually follow tradition, there's the dress, the shoes, the makeup and hair. Then the dinner the transportation, the dancing, and the date(s), which are all integral parts of a magical night dressed up in the most beautiful garb. Some girls don't have the privilege of affording too many of the lavish treats when it comes to prom night, and that's where Brown Eyed Chica stepped in. Founder of Brown Eyed Chica, Angie de la Riva, began her Pay It Forward project where girls from her old high school in El Paso, TX, Bowie High School submitted essays about who they are, their accomplishments and what they want to be when they grow up, and let me tell you the future goals of these amazing young ladies are extremely promising. The winners of the contest were by a panel of judges holding positions such as, teachers, bookkeepers, criminal analyst, students, writers, business owners and so many other interesting people. Since March, the promotion of the contest was advertised all over the hallways, bathrooms, and gyms of Bowie High school for girls to have their essays in by April 8th, out of the many who entered only two won!
Now for the Goods!
Nayely Camacho was the winner! She won a pedicure, manicure, MAC products, hair and makeup along with an early dinner at G2, a fancy restaurant in El Paso. She also walked away with some beautiful earrings, a chic ring and a vintage clutch. The Pay it Forward Project also bought Nayely her prom dress and treated her to lunch at Corner Bakery after a long day of shopping.
Nayely will soon be attending the University of Texas at Austin to double major in accounting and marketing, but that's the best of her abilities. When she was seven her mother died of pancreatic cancer, being the person she looked up to the most, Nayely describes her loss, pain and state of mind as "isolated." Although this was a traumatic event in her life, she bounced back and gave it her all. "I suppose that it’s because of her that I have that feel of "echale ganas!" in everything I do,”says Nayely. She is top three in her class, with dual credit and AP courses, she's involved in DECA (recently competed in Anaheim), a UIL speech prose competitor, a member of the Philosophy Club AND she currently shadows CPA’s as an internship. If that's not enough, Nayely is also a member of Cheer/Dance, and participates in community events, parades and workshops. She is definitely and awesome Chica!!!
Yesenia Torres was the runner up and she was pampered with a pedicure and manicure plus a delicious dinner from Red Lobster right before the dance, AWESOME!!!
Yesenia is the oldest of four and does so many things you'd go dizzy. She's an athlete involved in volleyball, cross-country, softball, track and, her favorite, soccer. Academically speaking, Yesenia's involved in the environmental club, a junior league project of 2013, the marching band, a national honor society member, and the physiology club. If that's not enough she likes to read and bake a little on the side. Yesenia's life goals are nothing less than sky high, she plans on studying aerospace engineering at the University of Texas at Austin to begin her path to becoming an astronaut and working with NASA. This Latina will go far!
Beginning a few years ago, the Bowie Prom makeover was a huge hit, but this is the first time Brown Eyed Chica hosted the event only for girls! It was a night to remember and everyone involved has been given the utmost gratitude for all their help. The girls were so grateful and everyone went home happy! The Brown Eyed Chica prom makeover event was definitely a success.
