When I first became an intern for Latinitas I wrote articles for the magazine. Writing has always been something I enjoy doing a lot and I truly believed in the mission of Latinitas, to create an outlet for young Latinas to express themselves with the goal of increasing the representation of Latinas in media.
Alicia then gave me the chance of becoming a club leader. A position where I got to interact with the young girls more directly and I realized that aside from giving them a creative outlet to express themselves, many needed guidance, confidence and support.
I realized that most if not all, came from a very similar background as mine and growing up without Latinitas or something similar, I often had to figure things out by myself. I did not have someone to show me what I had to do to succeed and it was something I wanted to give to these girls. I wanted for them to have a place where they could go and learn that they could truly be anything in life they wanted, To know it is possible.
What I've done to help future generations of Latinas to succeed has been to guide them, support them and give them a sense of belonging. To make them feel like not only can they belong in the media world but to know they can reinvent it.
My goal is for them to feel confident not only in who they are but where they come from. To one day pay it forward, and to one day be the ones to guide others.
