LatinitasMagazine.org - A Strong Voice for Latina Youth

I think I have talked about my grandmother before in here but I don't think I have ever written anything about only her. I cannot help but think of her whenever anyone asks about who we admire as women or who we look up to. Which is why once more, I just have to pick her.

She is my greatest inspiration in life and more than once I have told myself and others, she is the person I thrive to become as I get older.

My childhood memories are filled with images of her teaching me how to swim, cook, sow, playing games like tag and just sitting with her talking to her about pretty much anything. Her home and her presence are my favorite places in the world. And although she is the best grandmother anyone can ever have because she has always been there for me, this isn't the only reason why I admire her so much.

When I was younger, one if the most important and valuable lessons I learned form her was to help everyone you can in any way you can. Interestingly enough, I did not learn this lesson from her with words. I learned this by watching her everyday and seeing how she gave her life to her family and friends every single day.

There was nothing she would say no to when a friend or a family member would come to her for help. And time and time again she not only dedicated her life to my brothers and myself but to all of my tios and tias and cousins and of course to her own siblings. She is the base of our family and the most generous person I know.

She taught me that there is nothing more important than family and that sometimes family is not only composed of those who share your same blood type. And because she showed me the type of person she was when I was very young, I grew up knowing that that's exactly who I wanted to be when I would grow up.

One of my favorite things about anthropology is the fact that we are there to serve others and to give voice to those that might not have one and need help and support. And I can't help but think that because of this lesson she gave me, I chose the path that I am in now. And although I still have a long way to go before I become a bit of what she is, I continue to live by her example.
