LatinitasMagazine.org - A Strong Voice for Latina Youth

For as long as I can remember, I have been taller than all of my peers. I was always placed on the top level when school pictures were taken; always the one with the high-water pants in middle school; always being asked if I played sports, etc.  Growing up, it bothered me that I stood out so much. I often took notice of the shorter girls' feet  as they adorably swung a few inches from the floor when they sat down, while mine, long past swinging-length, plopped ungracefully on the tile below. I also remember the awkward feeling of having a crush on a boy and thinking he wouldn't like me back because I was tall and somewhat lanky.  Now this isn't a post about how I overcame this insecurity, because I still feel self-conscious about my height from time to time, but it does get easier to accept my 5'9" frame as I get older. I still feel like a giant next to my petite friends, and I still get self-conscious around attractive guys who are shorter than me( especially when I'm wearing high heels at an event), but I've realized that there are a couple of benefits to being tall. For one, I can reach things with much more ease, plus standing tall automatically communicates confidence ( so no slouching, ladies!) Besides, women wear high, high heels just so they can achieve that tall look, which I naturally have!

As a last note, my confidence in my height cycles on a regular basis, but something I like to do is look to tall celebrity women with healthy body images and try to exude the same self-assurance that they do. So for any other seasonally self-conscious tall girls out there, here are some fine examples of beautiful tall women who know how to work it!

Ivana Trump: 5'11"

Amelia Vega: 5'10"
