LatinitasMagazine.org - A Strong Voice for Latina Youth

Just a couple days ago me and my brother caught my little fifteen year old sister doing something she shouldn't be doing, smoking. She was smoking in her room with her friend and obviously the smell made it obvious. My mom wasn't home and me and my brother weren't sure of what to do. We talked about it and we made the decision to not tell my mom and have a talk with her. We let her know we weren't going to stop her because it was her body her decision, we simply let her know of the consequences. We explained to her what she was doing could cause and the troubles she could get herself in. We told her we weren't going to get her in trouble with mom, because she had been very distant from everyone in the family since my dad passed away last year. The last thing we want to do is push her away more by having her dislike us. We feel like we did the right thing because she will trust us to talk to us no matter what she does good or bad. Teenagers are curious and I feel she was curious, think we did the right thing?

Olga I am going through the exact same thing with my 15 year old sister! I find out some of the crazy things she is doing through Twitter and pictures on Instagram and I am so tempted to show my parents! I have tried talking to her a couple of times, but she hardly listens. It's crazy to think that she is so different than the way I was at 15! Sometimes I think she really wants attention. So I have definitely tried talking to her more often and being more involved in her life, rather than being a tattletale! I realized she really needs me during this time in her life. I feel like our relationship has become much stronger, and hopefully the one between you and your sister will too!

I think you did the right thing by not ignoreing what you saw. I know you and your brother care, so I think to show and let her know that you are there for her is what is important.

If it felt right, and you felt that your heart told you "this was the right thing to do", then yes you did. Also for your sister to be doing drugs at 15 it probably means she is troubled. In other words, she probably still feels the pain from your dad's loss. Also it's good that she talks to you about the things that bother her, because sometimes I have a hard time talking to a family member without the beans being spilled. Your sister is very lucky to have an older brother and sister she can count on. (Sorry if this whole paragraph sound a bit weird)
