LatinitasMagazine.org - A Strong Voice for Latina Youth

Very recently we had Dolores Huerta as a guest speaker in my school, she spoke in regards about education (what it really means to be 'educated'), education for women ( within their homes), and immigration. She brought up an interesting point on how having a degree does not really make you educated, it just makes you well prepare. In the English language being 'educated' means having some sort of degree. In contrast, in Spanish the word 'educado' means being polite, nice, and having good manners. In spanish when refering to a person with a college degree they say "bien preparado", well prepared instead. A person might have a degree and not really be educated because education is so much more than that. Its true, but that is not to say that you shouldnt go to college and get a degree. What she meant is never to forget to be a good person. Learn and give back to your community! Do you agree?

Yes! Great post. I saw Dolores Huerta speak at my school a while ago and she was so inspirational.  She used Cesar Chavez as an example.  Even though he didn't have a college degree, he was extremely intelligent and strategic man who read a lot. He dedicated his life to his passion for helping his community.  I think too many people focus on just using their education to help themselves instead of giving back.

I completely agree! Like Dolores Huerta, I believe that getting a degree is simply preparing you for what's to come, but that's not all there is to it. It's important to be well-rounded and learn lessons that can't be learned in books. Thank you for bringing this topic up!
