I don't know how many of you follow soccer. I know that in
my family soccer is a HUGE deal, especially every four years when the World Cup
comes around. My fondest memories are staying up late or waking up super early
just to watch Mexico play. My mom would buy coffee ice cream or popsicles
sticks so we could make it awake for the game. My sister always wears the
Mexico Jersey and my dad always screams at the players. I love soccer! My dad
used to play soccer until he got his knee fractured and couldn't play anymore.
He played for a couple of teams in Juarez and was going to be recruited into
the professional league. My husband also plays soccer but I always worry
because he always comes home hurt (he calls them battle scars). In high school
his team won a state championship and I guess that was one of the reasons I
married him :) Soccer has always been part of my life and my family makes it a
priority to watch the games.
Today the World Cup started and I woke up at 6am. The inauguration was
beautiful and unfortunately Nelson Mandela couldn't make it because his granddaughter passed away. I think it's great that South Africa is the host country because I feel like we never pay attention to that side of the world.
Anyway, this year was different because my husband was with us! :) It's so exciting to see your favorite team opening the world cup. I had to come to work of course but I heard it through the radio. Of course the team I root for is Mexico and I always will. I do love the US and they are really good but with soccer I feel more Mexican than American. My favorite teams are Mexico, Brazil, Spain and Argentina. Let's see who wins! Mexico tied today but I’m excited to see them against France and Uruguay!
