Tangled - Good Points & Bad Points

   Many people claim that the movie "Tangled" was a great example of feminism. But yet, some people are claiming that "Tangled" gave bad examples as well. I have my good points, but I do have some bad points about this movie. It's not that I'm starting to dislike this movie, is that Disney could have changed the story plot, a little bit more:

I will start with my good points, since there is so many to point out. Plus these are my reason why I love this movie:

1.) Rapunzel's dream is to see the floating lights, not love:

   In the beginning of the movie, Rapunzel's main goal is to go see the floating lights. Ever since she was a child, she would look  outside her window, wondering what the lights meant. Also it made her curious if these lights were stars or not. I mean, she painted her calculations of how the sunrises from the east and sundown to the west. Also, Rapunzel wanted to prove Mother Gothel that she isn't weak and she can be brave on her own. But when Mother Gothel refused to listen to Rapunzel (when Rapunzel had captured Flynn), Rapunzel decides to distract Gothel into getting her the white eggshells. While Mother Gothel is gone, Rapunzel ties Flynn up and makes a deal with him, so she can accomplish her dream or goal. 

2.) There is no judging in the whole movie: 

   When Flynn takes Rapunzel to the Snuggling Duckling, all the thugs looked evil, bad, dressed in clothing that many people would be afraid of. The place was pretty dark, and had a young man chained up to play for them each time he had a weapon thrown at him. Even Flynn describes the place in how it has a "bad man smell", but, for Rapunzel, like any other girl, is afraid of what she was seeing and of course was alerted for any trouble. As soon as Flynn was captured to be turned into the guards, Rapunzel quickly gives out her statement that she has a dream. Right away, one of the thugs comes up to Rapunzel and tells her, "I.....had a dream", then starts a tune of his own dream. During the tune, other thugs claim they have a dream; for example: Toll wants to quit and be a florist, Gunther is into interior design, Ulf is into mime, Attila's cupcakes are sublime, Bruiser knits, Killer sows, Ven does little puppet shows, and last but not least, a big tough guy named Vladimir collects ceramic unicorns. This teaches other people that they shouldn't judge someone just for the things they do and the clothes they wear. In other words, "Don't judge a book by it's cover when you haven't read it's pages". 

   Another example this movie shows, is Maximus (the horse who wants to capture Flynn Rider). Maximus thought that Flynn was a bad guy. Yes of course, Flynn is a thief, but, Flynn never had an intention of hurting another human being. For the actions that Flynn had done in the beginning, all that Maximus could think of was "capture Flynn and give him the punishment he deserves". In the end, Maximus realized that Flynn wasn't such a bad guy after all. Maximus saw how much Flynn cared about Rapunzel and how he didn't do any harm to anyone else. 

3.) Rapunzel saved Flynn's life more than once:

   In most movies, the girl is always in need of help, always. Aladdin; princess Jasmine was trapped in a giant hourglass and Aladdin had to crack it open to save her and get rid of the villain, Jefar. Sleeping Beauty, the only way princess Aurora was able to wake up, is with a true love's kiss. Which meant prince Philip had to kiss her to wake her up. This time, Rapunzel saved Flynn at the Snuggling Duckling, she gave him the pan when the guards were about to attack him, saved him from Maximus, when Flynn dropped the pan, also when they were trapped in the cave (without Rapunzel's glowing hair they could have drowned), when Maximus started dragging Flynn away to take him to jail, and last but not least, when Rapunzel's tear brought back Flynn to life. The only time Flynn saved Rapunzel is when he cut off her hair, setting her free, and of course, giving her a pixie hair style. 

4.) Proves that not all blonds are dumb:

   Many chick flick movies claim that the blond protagonist is dumb just because of her hair color. Tangled shows that just because the main character is a blond, it doesn't mean she's is going to be dumb or stupid. Rapunzel enjoys learning new things. She paints, studies the stars, play chess, loves reading books, wants to travel and get to know everything. Also she knows how to clean, bake, cook, and so much more. Many Disney princess movies hardly show the talents of a Disney princess. Yes, they do sing, but all Disney princesses are always singing. Ariel, she's the princess of the seven seas, but, what's her talent? Singing, and that's just it. Rapunzel even named her pet chameleon after a great mathematician, Blaise Pascal, which it can prove that she also enjoyed math. 

5.) Pascal was only there to cheer and support Rapunzel: 

   Pascal was always there for Rapunzel, every decision she made, he would only cheer her. Pascal wasn't able to talk, but, he was able to show Rapunzel his support by just pushing her and giving her the confidence she needed. Mulan; Mushu was "sent" by Mulan's ancestors to help get through the war. But, Mushu was able to talk and also he had to lead Mulan to make sure she wouldn't go in the wrong way. Unlike Pascal, he never had to lead the way or show Rapunzel which way was the right way or the wrong way, 

6.) Extra Good Points:

   Rapunzel claims that she is 18 years old, and dreams of seeing the floating lights. At the end of the movie, Flynn (or Eugene Fitzherbert) claims that him and Rapunzel do get married, but it was many years later. In other words, Rapunzel doesn't get married at the age of 18, unlike Ariel, who was only 16 when she got married. Another statement that many people enjoyed (especially women) is that Rapunzel dips Eugene and gives HIM the kiss. Many girls hate that guys are always dipping other women for that "romantic kiss". Rapunzel never gave up in accomplishing her goal, even after Mother Gothel warned her that supposedly Flynn was only taking her to kingdom just so he can get his satchel back. Mother Gothel is a great villain; like any other villains in Disney movies, Ursula, Maleficent, and Jefar, depended on magic to trick, wish, or curse a Disney princess. Mother Gothel only played with Rapunzel's feelings, told her many negative things about the world, and, would bring her down by telling her she won't be able to survive outside on her own. Also, when the King and Queen of the Kingdom are about to send the first flying lantern into the sky, the Queen consoles the King by wiping his tear away and smiling at him to give him the courage to go outside to send the flying lantern. Money isn't everything. When the thug helped Rapunzel and Flynn escape from the guards he says before they leave "Go, live your dream'' then Flynn responds back to him saying "I will". The thug looks back and answers back with " Your dreams stinks, I was talking to her". Flynn's original dream was that he wanted "an island, tan, rested, and alone, surrounded by enormous piles of money!", this gives an example of how the thug rejected Flynn's dream, even if it had included the money. 

Now that I have mentioned my good points, I will mention my bad points of the movie:

1.) The villain should have been a male: 

   Many people claim that Mother Gothel should have been a male villain than a woman. Why? Most of the people are tired of having a fight between and girl vs. girl. I do agree with this statement, I can't remember the last time a Disney princess had a male villain. Okay, Mulan did defeat the greatest enemy of China, but Disney could have done the same thing with Tangled. 

2.) Flynn cut off Rapunzel's hair:

   Instead of Flynn cutting off Rapunzel's hair, Rapunzel should have healed Flynn, THEN, cut off her own hair. When Flynn went to rescue Rapunzel it shows that there is always a man who has to set a girl free. 

3.) Older people are always the villain:

   Most of the Disney princess movies, the older people are always the bad person. In reality, older people are wiser and are very respectful. Disney should stop this and use more younger aged villains, or have middle aged villains. 

4.) Rebelling against your parents: 

   Even though it was good that Rapunzel's disobeyed Mother Gothel, it still shows that children to rebel against their parents will always lead them to success, which is not entirely true. Sometimes it's good to ignore what other people say to build your own path, but also if we ignore the warnings, we will take the wrong path.

Tangled has a lot of positive points in the movie, but also, there's some negativity for the audience. Rapunzel does show how brave she is and she  can be independent on her own, but also, being rebellious against your own parent isn't always the best solution to gain or reach the goal that you want.
