As we approach Selena Quintanilla's passin by the founder of her fan club, Yolanda Saldivar, let us not forget her as an inspirational chicana, or would you ladies prefer the term, LATINA, who embarked on a singing career by performing music in Spanish.
She became a star as lead singer of her father's band called Selena y los Dinos. The band incorporated her sister on drums and her brother on bass guitar. Respectfully she drew less than ideal crowd sizes when she first began.
As she sang more songs in Spanish, she gained the respect of her spanish speaking fans.
So it was no surprise that when she was murdered by the founder of her fan base, many still mourn her as a person and not just as a singer.
We still see many young girls trying to dress liker she would have. I know a couple of girls with massive amounts of magazines, posters, from the 90's no less!
Of all the songs I could think of to my relation with Selena, is if I think of the times my mother used to comb my hair into a ponytail and it really hurting as pulled my hair up.
I would exclaim to my mother, "Hay Mami! Como me duele!"
My mother would only mock me and sing Selenas next lyric, "hay ay ay, como me duele...." while she twirled my hair into a high bun.
Thanks mother. -_-
Anyone else have any other Selena stories?
