Immigrant Youth Launch National “Right to DREAM” Campaign Calling on
Obama to Provide Relief for All DREAMers
At Rallies Across the Country, Thousands of Immigrant Youth and Allies Will Issue Declaration of DREAMS, Urge Obama to End Deportations
**Press Call Thursday, May 17th at 11:00 AM EDT**
**Dial: 1-800-895-0231; Passcode: DREAM**
Washington, DC– In the first three years of the Obama Administration, the immigrant community has experienced more deportations than under President Bush or any other President, causing unspeakable pain for Latino and immigrant families – communities the President is especially interested in appealing to this year.
Despite promises for reform and a moderate deportation policy, the deportations have continued unabated. The President must shift his record and DREAMers around the country will rally this week to call on him to grant them relief. Twenty-two Senators have written a letter to the President asking for relief for DREAM Act eligible youth, legal experts have clarified the President’s authority to take executive action , and this week Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) expressed hope that relief is coming soon from the White House. Clearly, the President has the authority to act but the Administration has refused to reverse course.
Immigrant youth and their communities have had enough. On Thursday, May 17th, 2012, the United We Dream Network and their locally-led organizations of immigrant youth will hold rallies, marches, and protests to launch the national “Right to DREAM” campaign to call on the President to use his executive power to stop tearing immigrant families apart and provide real and lasting relief for DREAM Act eligible youth.
Several of tomorrow’s events are set to take place in important Latino battleground states including Florida, Colorado, Arizona, Texas and California. For a full list of events, see below.
On Thursday’s press call, a DREAMer in deportation proceedings alongside national and local DREAM advocates will describe their day of action and issue their “Declaration of Dreams” to call on President Obama to use his power to repair his legacy and make good on his promises to the immigrant community.
