Latina? Hispanic? Chicana? There's a difference? In all honesty, I've never truly sat down to think this through.I've always thought of myself as a Hispanic girl. I decided to look up the political meaning of each and compare them. To my surprise, this became extremely difficult. Every website differed within definitions; apparently the definition differs in terms to who uses these words. I think we can all agree on the fact that Chicano is most notable related to a derogatory term. Mexican- Americans still find this offensive, so I'm not sure that I should consider myself a Chicana.
I think between the two I would still come to consider myself Hispanic. I know I am not of direct Spanish descent, but Hispanic can also refer to those who come from countries once under Spanish rule. Mexico is included, and my closest descendants come from Mexico. I can understand that some people may find it frustrating that we, Latinos and Hispanics, may be viewed the same. Sometimes as long as we speak Spanish or eat tacos people automatically come to the conclusion that we are Mexican. I personally don't mind. Most of the time people are shocked that I can even speak Spanish! This cracks me up! I think I look very Mexican. But I can't say I don't like surprising people. I love the fact that whether Hispanic, Latina, or Chicana, I am proud of my roots and the enriched culture I am surrounded by.
