Now and again, when I scan past Comedy Central on my way to Bravo's ridiculous Housewives or VH1's Sober Houses, I see this ventriloquist Jeff Dunham doing his stand up. He's got multiple puppets. Achmed the Dead Terrorist, Jose the Jalapeno on a stick and another named Peanut which resembles the minstrel cartoons of the 30's, 40's and 50s which portrayed African American's as ape-like buffoons. It's hard to say which one is more offensive. The Dead Terrorist yields laughs as he talks of his failed suicide missions. Jose the Jalapeno is constantly the butt of "illegal alien" jokes. Hasn't anyone told Dunham that phrase is as dated as calling African Americans "colored people?" Though at Latinitas we are most reviled by the humor Jeff's puppets derive from the actuality of the immigration situation right now where families are divided, people are dying at the hands of vigalantes and worse - the character Peanut is the most disturbing. He seriously looks like those old "minstrel" characters that made fun of Blacks in film, cartoons and theater and he is a bozo. I'm just surprised that these stereotypes are still perpetuated and laughed at. I guess the worse offenders are the people in Dunham's audience. Call to action Latinitas - can we get more of you doing stand up comedy....so that we can end the reign of Jeff Dunham types!?
