joseph kony vs media

a few weeks ago, my English teacher was teaching us about the holocaust. she showed us a video that had something that really disturbed me..... some people thought the holocaust was sone big hoax!! there is even a book about called "the hoax of the 20th century". I just couldn't grasp how people had blocked out that huge event in history. there were so many victims. what evidence was there that it didn't happen?!


well, as you probably know, a few weeks ago a video went viral about Joseph Kony, the ugandan war lord. cony is a truly horrible person, and has done things that are worse than what happened during the holocaust. he kidnaps young children. he turns the girls into sex slaves and gives boys weapons and makes them to fight. he forces them to kill their parents and mutilate innocent peoples' faces. his group is known as the lord's resistance army, or LRA.


today, my mom gave me some gorgeous jewellery; a bracelet and some earrings. they were made if paper. my mom told me that they were made by children who had escaped the LRA or children who were from it. then, she told me a story that just shattered my heart until I cried.


my mom told me that her she had gotten the jewellery from her friend, Mary**, who had go e to Uganda and met some kids who make the jewellery. everyone in the village Mary visited were victims of a horrendous LRA assault. cony forces innocent children to kill their parents in front of everyone in the village by chopping them up. then he made the people cook the pieces and eat them. he forced them to turn into cannibals, and eat their fellow villagers.


I was.. I am, horrified by this. i told all my friends. the fact that it came from my mom and here friend, it made it seem all more believable. then, one of my friends said, "you know kony is fake, right?" I was shocked. and I understood why people didn't believe in the holocaust either.

the media tells so many different stories that it's hard to separate true from fake. its especially hard when its something on an entirely different continent. and when it comes to things like Kony or Hitler, people naturally want to block it out and pretend that there is nothing wrong with our little world. the truth is, our dear earth has horrible things and people like Kony, and I believe he needs to be stopped.
