This is a note to all the college age Latinitas: get ready for midterms! If you've already had your midterms my sympathy is with you, if you are about to have your midterms, my tears are with you.
This is my second year in college and I still don't understand why every professor thinks it's okay to place tons of tests right next to each other. I have 5 tests in less then two weeks. That's right, one test for every one of my classes and they are all so close to each other. Thankfully I have no tests on the same day. And believe me that happens, I once had a friend who had 4 tests in one day. It was not pretty.
But see, Latinitas, it's not the amount of tests that bothers me, it's the studying. I came from a very poor school in Houston. I'm sure some of you know the kind of school I'm talking about. Predominantly Latino, full of kids who don't want to be there, more pregnant girls walking the halls then there should be, drug searches conducted monthly, gang colors displayed proudly. And well the teachers cared more about keeping you in school then getting you to college.
I had a couple good teachers but not enough. So obviously my college skills weren't very high up. That"s why studying for tests still kills me. I was never taught how. Sure I had tests here and there but never anything exceptionally hard, or anything I had to study for intensely. Then BAM! college hit me like a big yellow school bus. One test every couple of weeks, that I can deal with, but 5 in less then two weeks, color me terrified.
I'll learn though and I know I'll end up doing pretty fine, I always have but the anxiety still gets to me.
But I'm a strong Latina and I've made it this far, why stop now. Right girls?

Comment by Sonia Rangel on October 22, 2012 at 12:30pm Hey girl, I know what you mean....I met with the U.S Secretary of Education Arne Duncan last Friday and one of the things we talked about was college readiness. We both agreed that more things need to be done to prepare high school students for college. Not just teaching them how to pass standardized tests but also teaching students good study habits and test taking skills. Hang in there girl, we Latino college graduates are few and far in between and we need more of us to influence policy and help change this sad reality.
