My history professor seemed nice at first, but as they always say, looks can be deceiving. I saw her true colors from the moment an African-American student came in, he was interested in the class and was wondering if he could “add it.” He asked her and she played dumb and pretended not to hear him. She likes to be addressed as “Dr.” because she has a PhD. But surprisingly despite with her years of being in school and presumably analyzing literature of all sorts, she couldn’t figure out what the poor guy was meaning. She smirked at him, turned and nodded her head and rudely said “no” to him. In reality it meant –and she knew it- was a yes (she was adding new students, so she lied to him). This rudeness from teachers and professors is nothing new to me, I’ve been observing this for years and it really bothers me. They have no right to be mean to students within the campus, to their own students and others.
One thing is for sure, I won’t let her bully me in class!

Wow! I have never had this experince with any of my professors. I think that lady has to bring her ego down a little and appreciate that she has a job!
hope you have a good semester!
Comment by Jasmine Villa on September 4, 2012 at 9:14am Congrats on sticking up for yourself! Not that many students have the courage to do so and would rather "ride it out", so to speak. I had a professor who would belittle students on their essays. She had the nerve to write on someone's essay: "You shouldn't be an English major" or "Why are you studying English?" It was horrifying to see her address students that way. Luckily, she never said anything remotely close to that to me, but it was disheartening to see students who had seemingly decent papers be addressed that way. Too many professors have that self-entitled attitude, but I see it as a learning experience for how to NEVER address or act that way around people, let alone students.
Comment by Veronica Porras on September 3, 2012 at 12:26am I am glad to not be the only one that has noticed the condescending nature of some professors. I know personally that it is disheartening to have someone that is supposed to be incredible abuse her power and try to put one down. It is definitely something I will never forget but am proud to have overcome. It is great that you will not let her bully you! The worst that you can do is not stand up for yourself if things get out of hand. My advice is don't let her have any more power than she already has by ever feeling that as a student no one will be there for you. You have more power than you think. You can always report her bad behavior and make sure that no other students go through the same "rudeness."
I am not sure what else we can do to get better professors out there but I would like to keep faith and believe that there are many more out there that will really care about their work.
