Hey everyone! I'm just going to jump right into it. Today I'm going to talk about something that I have been seeing a lot on Facebook and something that actually impacts my life. As you may or may not know, I am the proud daughter of a police officer. My dad works for the Saginaw County Sheriff's Department here in Michigan. RIght now he is road sergeant. He works nights, from six to six and the days he works we don't get to see him all that much. He leaves for work at 4:30ish and with practices and things it complicates things.
My dad is my hero. He does so much not only for my famliy, but for people everywhere. All of my friends always tell me how cool it is that my dad is a cop and I totally agree with them. Unfortunately not everyone can have a dad as awesome as mine.

Anyways, so lately on Facebook I've been seeing a lot of posts that include the hashtag 'Police Lives Matter'. Like seriously it's everywhere. There's pictures and videos and posts all saying '#PoliceLivesMatter' or '#TheyMatterToo'. There have been rally's and marches all about this topic. I 100% agree with the posts I see. Police lives DO matter. Every police officer out there is a dad, a son, a brother, an uncle, a mom, a sister, a daughter, an aunt. They all have families that can't imagine life without that officer. And every single police officer goes to work every day in their life not knowing what's going to happen or if they will come home at night. Officers do more than write tickets when people are speeding. They keep everyone safe. There are some crazy people out in the world and those officers make sure others are safe, even if it means putting their own life on the line.
To be honest I personally can't imagine living without my dad in my life. I can't imagine coming home and not seeing him all the time. I can't imagine cheering at football games or dancing at recitals and not having him there to cheer me on. I can't imagine not being able to go see movies and just hang out with him on his off days. It would suck.
My dad has been there to wipe my tears, make me laugh and smile, teach me important things I will forever use, and support me in everything I do. If someone tells me that cops are stupid or they don't know what they're doing, I'm going to argue with them. I don't care if it's someone I talk to on a daily basis or some random kid at school. Don't tell me that those officers don't matter until you go put on that badge and risk your life.
Police everywhere get injured or worse all the time. When one of them doesn't make it, do you ever really see a ton on that death? Not really. And no one ever really argues it. No one ever says, "hey what about that officer who didn't make it?". But when some idiot who acts stupid and doesn't know how to act even if they are an adult does something resulting in death, it's everywhere. Or when someone dies and people blame it on the cops, that never really goes away either. But what about those officers who were shot and killed when they were just doing their jobs?
Another thing, when I was scrolling through the news on Google for my college homework I saw like ten different topics that make police officers seem like the bad guys. One headline that stood out to me was talking about police shooting at someone when it 'wasn't justified'. Okay, police officers are not going to shoot if they don't have a good reason. They aren't going to shoot just for the fun of it. No, everytime an officer uses his gun it's for a good reason. It's not because they felt like it. It's not because they haven't done it in a while and felt the need to. It's not for fun. It's because sometimes it's the only way to get the situation under control. Okay then what are they supposed to do if they are being attacked and can't do anything else? What if the attacker has a gun of their own and is shooting at the police? Are they just supposed to stand there? Just be like 'oh hey you are shooting at me and I could die but I'm not going to do anything.'? No, they are going to protect themselves. But they're going to do everything they can before pulling their gun. If they can get the situation under control without having to use their gun then they will. My dad has never ever shot his gun at anyone because he is able to get things controlled without needing it.
Police lives really do matter and everytime we lose an officer, we lose someone special. Your mom or dad might not be a cop but could you imagine if they left for work and didn't come back? How would it impact your life?
