Puerto Ricans vs. Dominicans: A Never-Ending Controversy

Now I know we are all proud to be latinas in our own way. We either like our music, our food, or any other aspect of the culture. You would think that we would stand united with other latinas. However, we, for the most part, stand divided. There seems to be a constant war between Puerto Ricans and Dominicans. While racism spreads throughout the world, inter-racism spreads throughout here. It is unclear as to how this war started, but it seems to get more and more intense as years progress. I've tried to brush it off a lot, but it's starting to get under my skin. I am half Puerto Rican and I go to a school that's half African American and half Hispanic. The majority of the Hispanics are Dominican. Things start off as a joke at first. However, things usually begin to escalate. Then suddenly, it's the 3 Puerto Ricans in my grade against like 10 of the Dominicans. I am constantly hearing Puerto Ricans be belittled because of how the United States owns Puerto Rico and we have become "americanized." Then, I hear Puerto Ricans making fun of how Dominicans make it to this country and the low-paying jobs they have to subject themselves to. This controversy is getting too out of hand. Latinos should be united against all odds, not degrading each other because of the odds that we are continuing to face.

It's unfortunate that we, as a Latino culture, stand divided. The Dominican and Puerto Rican feud reminds me of several feuds found in my hometown, El Paso. Bordering Mexico would lead you believe that we are supportive and appreciative of Mexico, but it's ridiculous how U.S. born Mexicans treat people from Juarez by calling them degrading names/assuming a "superior" position. Granted, not everyone thinks this way, but it is fairly common. If you see a Chihuahua licence plate, it's an automatic assumption that they're really bad drivers or that they're "fresas". There are a lot of stereotypes, a lot of Latino VS Latino hate instead of helping one another out. Shame, really
