Recommendations for college entrance essays

My recommendation for all Latinitas applying to college is to be honest with yourself when writing your college entrance essays. Universities enjoy reading about what got you to this point- the point of applying to college, how has your life shaped you into who you are today, and what are your hopes and dreams for the future. I wish I can remember what I wrote back in 2007 when I was applying to college, but I know I included my perseverance and positive attitude to school and staying involved. Remember, that it is also okay to start off at a community college, then transfer once you get a better grasp of what you want to do- it will actually save you lots of money, hassle, and stress because you won't have to start paying loans when you are only getting your general education done. Looking back, I wish I had done that. In life we will always have those moments of I "could've, would've, should've," but it's always important to stay alert and make the present your main focus.

Also, remember that it's okay if you are not totally sure on what you want to major in. Most of us are not sure, or completely change our major once we are in school. I thought I wanted to be a Doctor and save lives for a living. Although a great career choice, I changed my mind once I took my first film theory class. I found a love for creative research, and reporting on topics I find interesting. I graduated with a major in Media and Cultural Studies, concentration in Film and Visual Media, and minor in Spanish (which I declared after my year abroad in Spain). I don't regret that decision, because I am doing what I love now. I am the Social Media Director and a Field Organizing Fellow for the Emanuel Pleitez for L.A. Mayor Campaign, while reporting and writing for Latinitas and the Independent Voter Network. Through these activities, I am meeting new people, staying curious and always willing to learn, working with a diverse group, and at the same time finding my next adventure! Life isn't about getting that dream job right after college, it's about doing what you love for the right reasons.

Stay strong, stay vibrant, and do what you love!
