One of my favorite family traditions is our New Years celebration. Every year my family goes to Monterrey, Mexico and gathers at my abuelita Cuquis house for food, party and games. We are a highly superstitious family and we like to follow the latest trends that will bring good luck to the new year. There is one particular tradition that never fails each year and this is to give someone a pair of red underwear, symbolizing endless amounts of love for the coming year. This tradition was soon updated, when my cousin Pamela heard on a tv show, that you will find love by wearing the red gifted panties but they have to be inside out on New Year's Eve and on the stroke of midnight you have to change them back. Imagine more than 13 cousins rushing to abuelita's three bathrooms at the same time to change, hilarious! Now we are older and most of us have boyfriends or are married but we still follow the tradition.
Another New Year's tradition that never fails is to stuff a suitcase with things that you want to do over the year. For instance, if you want to go to the beach you stuff a swimsuit, etc. Then at midnight, we walk around the block with our suitcases symbolizing travel throughout the year. The neighbors already know this tradition, so they wait for us outside and always ask, "este año para donde se nos van?" , "where are we going this year?" One cousin always says Cancun, and she manages to go every year. We have many more traditions that always happen at midnight, haha, it gets very chaotic but is part of the fun and being a family. This year I'm inviting my boyfriend to my family's new year celebration. He is from New Hampshire and comes from a family that just likes to have a nice meal for the new year. I can't wait to see his reaction when he partakes on the traditions.
