LatinitasMagazine.org - A Strong Voice for Latina Youth

One thing about college I'm wary about is finding roommates that won't fill my life with drama. Unfortunately, (most) girls love and thrive in drama. I've always known this, but I was never so sure of it until my first year in college. I didn't know anyone in College Station and had to live with three girls I didn't know; "potluck roommates," it was called. I immediately any of my three roommates, but I dismissed it because I tend to get horrible first impressions of people in general. Eventually, I became really close to one of my roommates and I got along with one of the other girls. The third roommate was a slob. The whole year we had problems with her because she refused to clean. One of my roommates didn't handle the messiness well, and she started bullying her into cleaning. Needless to say, at the end of the year, I only talked to one roommate. It was horrible and stressful and I vowed never to have an experience like that again.

This past year, I lived with a friend from home and two random girls. Though I clearly stated I didn't want any pets in the apartment when I asked the apartment complex to match me up with two girls, one of them had a dog.. and a boyfriend that lived there too. I didn't ask for that, nor did I want to live with some random guy NOT paying rent OR electricity. I already had my share of tense relations the previous year and I didn't want to start that again. I was not happy the entire year though. I didn't appreciate a messy boyfriend I didn't like nor dog hairs all over the place. Things weren't tense like they were the first year, but I was secretly angry and annoyed whenever I was "home". That's not how I should have been feeling in my own apartment.

This upcoming year, I'll be living with two friends of mine and I'm hoping that everything will run smoothly. We've already learned from our prior mistakes and have set ground rules before even moving in. I'm looking forward to this year; maybe "home" will finally feel like home.

I had a similar roommate horror story experience this year! We had a roommate that bailed on us during the middle of the year! It caused me and my other roommates a lot of stress when the apartment complex filled the vacant room with a girl who was bringing a dog after we had specified we didn't want any pets! We were forced to move into a whole new apartment! I have my fingers crossed our new living arrangements will go better for both of us next year, (us English majors don't need any added stress!) ;) Good luck!

I'm so sorry to hear that you've had horrible past experiences with roommates! I always hear horror stories like these but the worst one included a girl actually putting a restraining order on her roommate. The only year I've been away for college ran somewhat smooth because I knew the girls since elementary. However, I know we had our differences and one of them got out with hard feelings against us. It happens to everyone, I guess it's something normal. I hope this semester it all turns around in a positive way! :)
