Sophomore Summer blues

To those of you who do not know me let me introduce myself. My name is Karen Zamora, a 20 year old who just completed her sophomore year at Texas State University and currently undergoing sophomore year blues. I am originally from El Centro, San Diego area in southern California. I am a daughter of a border patrol agent and moving across the country several times has become a norm for me. 

My very first blog post was about Earth Day, my second was about depression, and my third is about how to keep busy during the summer.

As a journalism student, finding an internship after my sophomore year is critical — or so I have been told. But the problem I keep running into is trying to pay for these internships. Most internships that are in my line of work are unpaid and require college credit. Financially, I cannot afford to take on an unpaid internship away from home, hence my sophomore summer blues. I did my fair share of applying to paid internships, but as summer is coming into full swing those are slim to none. But instead of watching Gossip Girl all day in my pajamas, I decided to make a "Summer without an Internship To-Do List." If you are in the same situation as me, hopefully this helps.

1. Look for fall internships: Summer is not the only time of year you can further your career.

2. Learn an instrument: I am still trying to find an inexpensive cello. 

3. Start a healthy life-style: Instead of spending the day inside, go out for a run. Summer is the season for nice weather. Take advantage and play frisbee or swim in the pool.

4. Write a book: We cannot all be like J.K. Rowling or Jane Austen, but we can try! 

5. Regroup with tios, tias, abuelas, y abuelos: Before you graduate from school, start your own family take the time to learn about your history. 

6. Make a list of books to read: Currently, I am reading The Road

7. Make a list of things you want to accomplish next school year: For me, it's making better grades and doing yoga once a week!
