LatinitasMagazine.org - A Strong Voice for Latina Youth

A few weeks back we had the STEM Chica Workshop where we had a college panel of UTEP student majoring in computer science, engineering, and biology. I got to be one of the students in the panel. We were asked to share out experiences about classes, organizations, finals week, and college like over all. One of the questions we were asked was "what advice would you given to an upcoming college student?" I had the opportunity to answer this question, My advice to any upcoming college student is to always introduce yourself to your professors.

My first semester in college I emailed my professors, about a week before classes started, asking about books and how much we were going to use them. Once the semester started my first class I walked in late and had to sit in the very back of the classroom. Our professor briefly talked about the importance of making sure your professors knew who you were. He then called out my name and asked that I stand, I was a little in shock. He then went on to say "For example, now I know who Lucero is, she is the girl who likes to know how often the book will be used before she buys it." He continued to say "I know she will do well in class since she takes initiative to contact professors if there is any issues". He then asked me to take my seat.

I know to many it might not mean much, but after that I have always taken the initiative to introduce myself with professors. This has helped me have a better relationship with professors. It makes it easier to ask for advice on anything regarding classes or careers.

There is an number of things one can do to stand out to professors, but a simple one is to introduce yourself. After the end of your first class, stay behind and introduce yourself with a firm hand shake. It's simple but very effective.

Is there any advice you would give to an upcoming college student?
