Almost half of the population in the United States is Hispanic, and even more are immigrants from different Latin countries. For this very reason we need to take a stand, pay attention to our political process and do the research on our nation's leaders to make sure that we have a say in what's going on. There have already been many laws passed against immigration, and some that discriminate against the Hispanic population. Although many of us are unaware, or are doing nothing about it, you still have a chance. Register to vote, not only so you can participate in the presidential election, but to also help our local community. The deadline for Texas registration is September 25, so start steppin'! We need a higher percentage of the Latina population to participate in the laws that are governing us. We make up a good chunk of the country, and we need to take a stand to help improve our presence here. Whatever your political preferences may be, if you have any, do your research. There is a lot of information out there on what's going on, and it's up to us to make a change.
Some celebrities have already began taking a stand in political action, not with any particular political party, but a stand for the Latino population. Maria Teresa Kumar is the CEO, and Rosario Dawson is the face of VOTO LATINO - an organization providing information on what's going on in the political Hispanic community that urges us to exercise our responsibility. .
Their slogan is:
Voto Latino is a next-generation, constituency based organization that empowers American Latinos to claim a better future by voting. United by the belief that Latino issues are American issues and American issues are Latino issues, Voto Latino is dedicated to bringing new and diverse voices into the political process by engaging youth, media, technology and celebrities to shake up the political process.
So whatever your political stance may be, take a chance and learn about your community and your country to make a difference and create a better tomorrow.
