I became a Latinitas intern this past July, and the work I have done with them has been extremely rewarding. One of things that always come to mind when I attend the after school clubs is how much they remind me of me, and how I used to be when I was their exact age. We come from similar backgrounds, similar experiences and so I know what its like to be in their shoes, with similar issues, worries, values and lifestyles. I see what Latinitas does for our local community and local girls and I only wish I would of had something similar back then.
During our Latinitas Saturday Events and our after school clubs, we teach girls important lessons about self-esteem, school and college, self expression, how to be more organized, how to be a leader and to help your community and of course, about other great females who have accomplished so many great things and have paved the way for us, the future generations.
I believe these lessons are very important because they truly empower girls to believe they can accomplish anything they set their minds to. To me it is extremely important to not only encourage our youth often by telling them they can do great things but to show them as well all of the possibilities they have. To show them they have options and how far they can go. To reach for their dreams. What I hope for the most when working during afterschool clubs or other Latinitas events is to inspire girls to do something amazing with their lives and to love themselves for who they are. I hope to show and teach them to pay it forward so that one day they can help another girl as well. To just know that they come to the after school clubs and have a little fun while learning something as simple as loving yourself, that alone brings a smile to my face. And that's what I try to do for my community. <3
